Continuing the trend of a light-hearted season alive, tonight’s episode of The Flash did just that. With each episode, we are diving a little deeper into this season’s villain, The Thinker. The episode opened with a flashback dating back three weeks. It continued to introduce us to The Thinker’s merry band of unique meta-human villains, who seem to possess abilities courtesy of the portal created by Barry’s return (as they discover in this episode). It essentially created a dark matter explosion affecting those nearby and turning them into meta-humans (remember Kilg%re?).
Also amongst them, is Becky Sharpe (Sugar Lyn Beard), aka Central City’s good luck leech, Hazard. Her presence creates an environment that bestows her with good luck while giving bad luck to everyone around her. Unfortunately, this streak of bad luck doesn’t bode well for Iris and Barry while they desperately search for a wedding venue. Sadly, the bad luck pours over into Wally’s life as well, courtesy of a high-tech “break-up box”. Harry Wells’ Earth-1 return comes bearing bad news of Jesse breaking up with Wally. Meanwhile, Joe’s house is on the verge of falling apart and he faces the decision of selling it, despite his reservations not to.
In a desperate and humorous attempt to turn their luck around, Iris decides she wants to get married ASAP, even if it means without their family and friends. Unfortunately, the priest falls ill in the middle of the ceremony, and bad luck catches up with them again. No can seem to catch a break as Central City finds themselves in the middle of an epic bad luck storm.
Harry saves the day when he finds a way to negate Becky’s negative quantum field by letting the particle accelerator explode (which turned on during the bad luck storm). This causes Becky to lose her good luck streak and brings peace and order back to Central City. Phew, that was a close one.
Thanks to some heat image scanning of the meta-bus, they discover there were twelve total people that were affected by the dark matter explosion. 2 down, 10 to go!
The episode ended on a bittersweet moment, as Wally announced that he needs to discover who he is. He decides he will leave Central City to stay with a friend in Blue Valley. It seems that for now, we must bid farewell to Kid Flash while he embarks on a journey to self-discovery. But where there was sad news, there was also an exciting announcement. Cecile is pregnant! Joe’s reaction is priceless as he finds himself completely speechless.
And not to mention, the team figures out that something seems shady about the series of events that have unfolded since the Samuroid came to Central City. They have started to connect the dots which will inevitably lead them to..the Thinker!
Tonight’s episode continued to build on the storyline for this season in the best way possible, a hint of drama, a touch of funny, and a baby announcement! This has been a wonderful change from the gloom and doom of last season. With the characters being more hopeful for their future, it feels reminiscent of the Flash we all fell in love with.
Score: 7/10
