Synopsis: Riggs and Murtaugh are thrown into the world of counterfeit money. When a group of teenagers inadvertently gets involved, it strikes a chord with Murtaugh, who is dealing with his own issues regarding his son, RJ. Meanwhile, Riggs decides to pay a visit to someone from his past. (IMDB)

It would only make sense that the best episode in the series so far would be followed by the worst. This episode was simply overstuffed with subplots which made it hard to follow for the most part.

As you can tell, this episode is about counterfeiting as a trio of teenagers inadvertently stumble onto a counterfeiter falling out of a window above them and dying. He also happened to have a bad full of counterfeit money which the teens took (they didn’t know that it was counterfeit).

Helping them on their case was a so called legendary secret service agent named Hank Peterson (Ernie Hudson) who had been pursuing the counterfeiters. Everyone treated Peterson like he was a legend but Murtaugh couldn’t see it. He also didn’t appreciate Peterson getting all the credit for the same observations as Murtaugh although Murtaugh came up with them first. Murtaugh also took offense with Peterson’s insinuation that he was on the verge of retirement.

Following the counterfeit money and what Peterson believed was his golden goose, they just stumbled onto the earlier teenagers enjoying their ill-gotten riches. Murtaugh and Riggs put an end to their party but one teen, a boy named Ty (Nathan Davis Jr.) got away with their bag of money. Riggs attempted to catch him but Ty got away. Instead of finding out who killed the counterfeiter, the episode was more focused on the teens, more specifically Ty. As Riggs has often done, he became invested in Ty. Also, whoever killed the counterfeiter believed the teens had counterfeiting plates they wanted so they went after Ty.

For some silly reason involving Riggs lying about having not having a family, Ty snuck into Peterson’s trunk as he was about to sell the counterfeiting plates to the same criminals who killed the counterfeiter. Before Peterson could hand them over, Ty ran away with them. Murtaugh and Riggs caught up with Peterson who made up a story about what happened. While Riggs was looking for Ty, Murtaugh tore down Peterson’s story. With that saga over, Riggs encouraged Ty to embrace his new foster family.

Now let’s quickly run through everything else that happened:

  • Riggs got Ben a puppy for Ben without telling Molly. It disappeared and was later found dead under mysterious circumstances.
  • Murtaugh and Trish were worried about RJ because he was hard to reach and appeared to not be going to class. RJ decided that he wanted to drop out of college. They wondered what they did wrong as parents. They needed a plan for his future but luckily RJ came up with his own plan so maybe Murtaugh and Trish weren’t such bad parents after all?
  • Cahill wanted to prepare Riggs for how to deal with his father. She was okay with the walls he had built between himself and his father.
  • The episode ended with Riggs visiting his father and vowing to kill him if he were ever released.

Overall, this was a mediocre episode that tried to do too much, hurting it as a whole. None of it worked particularly well, mostly being rehashes, with the only interesting thing to happen was the quick scene at the end between Riggs and his father. To the series credit, this is only the second time that this is happened, meaning that it is more often good than not which is something that not many series can claim.

Score: 6.5/10
