Promo Spot
Synopsis
When Mulder and Scully investigate a possible conspiracy in the U.S. Air Force, Mulder meets a mysterious informant who warns him to stay away from the case but, undeterred, Mulder comes closer to the truth than ever before, only to have it snatched away from him.
Analysis (spoilers)
This is the first real case Mulder and Scully ever worked on, investigating a possible conspiracy involving Air Force pilots mysteriously disappearing for long periods of time, more specifically a case involving colonel Robert Budahas (Andrew Johnston) from the Ellens Air Force base in Idaho. This episode also includes Mulder’s first encounter with longtime informant called Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin). They also run into “UFO nuts” who have flocked to the Air Force base in question as they believe that these Air Force pilots may have operated alien spacecrafts. Mulder believes that they are operating spacecrafts built using alien technology. They potentially see these spacecrafts but of course Scully is skeptical. Colonel Budahas later reappears but his wife claims that he is not her husband. He appears to have had certain memories erased as he was deemed a risk. They were later confronted by mysterious men in suits who felt they were getting too close. This is also our first glimpse of Mulder’s defiant dedication as he goes against orders to continue investigating the base. Mulder gets a closer look at something that definitely looks like a spacecraft. Mulder gets taken by the Air Force and while under mild sedation, he sees some of their work inside the base. Scully holds someone at gunpoint to get to the base while Mulder appears to have the same memory-erasing procedure performed on him. The man is exchanged for Mulder. The Air Force seemingly got to the Budahas’s so they no longer want to talk to Mulder and Scully. They never found out what happened to Colonel Budahas. Mulder runs into Deep Throat again who warns them that his and Scully’s lives are in danger and reveals his motives in helping Mulder.
