Genius

No, this movie isn’t about me. This movie is about Max Perkins (Colin Firth), a book editor at Scribner, who oversaw works by great authors including Thomas Wolfe (Jude Law), Ernest Hemingway (Dominic West), and F. Scott Fitzgerald (Guy Pearce). This trailer focuses on Perkins’ relationship with Wolfe as they work together on his very ambitious book. This of course takes over their lives, much to the dismay of the women in their lives Aline Bernstein (Nicole Kidman) and Louise Saunders (Laura Linney). I found interesting how the film depicts that time period and the impressive cast and the fact that I like Colin Firth makes this something I want to see. Genius releases July 29th, 2016.

The Shallows

I’ve always been a fan of movies with solo-driven plots. Movies like “Cast Away”, “Life of Pi”, and “Gravity” come to mind. Even though we are only seeing one person on screen the majority of the time, they still manage to keep us engaged by keeping it exciting. I don’t know if this is the case here but that is the impression I got from the trailer. When Nancy (Blake Lively) is attacked by a great white shark while surfing alone, she is stranded just a short distance from shore. Though she isn’t far away from shore, she must still deal with the shark. This will probably be a battle for survival between her and the shark and I will be interested in seeing who wins. I’m pulling for the shark. The Shallows releases June 24th, 2016.

The Legend of Tarzan

If you would like to read my thoughts on the previous trailer, click here. This time we get to see how Tarzan (Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd) was born and came to be. Of course we already knew this but it was nice to see it here. Now we also know that he will go to great lengths to protect the woman he loves, Jane Porter (Margot Robbie). When the evil (educated guess) Captain Rom (Christoph Waltz) has taken Jane, it is up to Tarzan to save her. I will say the stampede scene was obvious CGI but it looked exciting. Samuel L. Jackson also stars (which could only make it better). The Legend of Tarzan releases July 1st, 2016.

X-Men: Apocalypse

If you would like to read my thoughts on the previous trailer, click here. I thought the first trailer took what we remembered about the X-Men and ramped it up a few notches. This one does it even more as the world appears in even more danger, caused by the world’s first mutant, Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac). While the world is in ruins (which looks a little much to me), the team is being put together to try to defeat the formidable Apocalypse (who seems a little much too) and his four horseman. Back for this one are James McAvoy (Charles Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), and Rose Byrne (Moira MacTaggert) just to name a few. X-Men: Appocalypse releases May 27th, 2016.

All The Way

Now this is just a TV movie but I would still like to acknowledge it because of its star, Bryan Cranston. I am a big fan of him and I think he is one of the greatest actors today. This movie is based on a play of the same name in which Cranston also starred in and won a Tony for. He stars as President Lyndon B. Johnson as he assumes the presidency following the aftermath of John F. Kennedy’s assassination and works toward passing the Civil Rights Act. I thought Cranston was great in Trumbo and I definitely think he’ll be Emmy-worthy here. Melissa Leo (Lady Bird Johnson) and Anthony Mackie (Martin Luther King Jr.) round out the cast. All The Way premieres Saturday May 21st at 8pm on HBO.
