The Birth of a Nation
This one is a big one as it has been garnering a lot of pre-awards buzz. After watching this trailer, it’s pretty easy to see why. 12 Years a Slave was another recent film about slavery which won its fair share of awards but I find this one a lot different. In this film Nat Turner (Nate Parker), a former slave in America, leads a liberation movement in 1831 to free African-Americans in Virginia that results in a violent retaliation from whites. This one looks great, as does Nate Parker in the lead role. I am kind of curious as to how the film will depict the history of that time. This film looks exciting and will surely win awards of its own. The Birth of a Nation releases October 7th, 2016.
Nine Lives
Christopher Walken turns Kevin Spacey into a cat. Need I say more? If I don’t have you yet, Tom Brand (Spacey) is a successful businessman whose success has come at the expense of his family . To try and make amends, he buys his daughter a cat for her birthday. En route to his daughter’s party, Tom has a terrible accident. When he regains consciousness he discovers that somehow, he has become trapped inside the body of the cat. Now Tom has a week to reconnect with his daughter Rebecca (Malina Weissman) otherwise he will be trapped as a cat forever. I don’t know about you but there is just something about Kevin Spacey as a cat named Mr. Fuzzypants that amuses me greatly. Nine Lives releases August 5th, 2016.
