The Golden Globe nominations were announced recently and many outlets have provided their own predictions. I’ve been a little busy and I wanted to wait until I saw some of the big movies (Manchester by the Sea, La La Land) until I posted this but now I am ready so I have included my predictions along with links to reviews below. I still haven’t seen all the nominated movies yet but when I see more of them before the awards, I will update my predictions. I’ve left certain categories where I haven’t seen enough movies to formulate an opinion blank.

The Golden Globes aren’t just about movies as they also recognize achievement in television. If you’ve been following my site, then you know about TV writer Sam Schultz. I have included his predictions below.

Best Motion Picture , Drama:
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell Or High Water (Guest Review)
Lion
Manchester By The Sea
Moonlight

Should win: Manchester By The Sea

  • This was a great family drama led by the Best Actor frontrunner in Casey Affleck. This award is either going to Manchester by the Sea or Moonlight and I’d be happy either way but I think Moonlight will end up on top.

Will win: Moonlight

  • This was an amazing, immersive journey through the life of a man trying to find his own identity in a dark world. This was storytelling like none other. Again, this is between Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea.

Winner:

Best Motion Picture , Musical or Comedy:
20th Century Women
Deadpool
La La Land
Florence Foster Jenkins
Sing Street

Should win: Deadpool/Sing Street – tie

  • It’s still weird to see Deadpool in this category but that just speaks to the amount of great comedies this year. Deadpool was a superhero movie but it was much more than that. Deadpool was one of the best movies this year and Ryan Reynolds’ performance is what earned the nomination. Sing Street just makes you feel good. Beit the catchy music or the compelling family drama. I couldn’t choose between the two so it’s a tie.

Will win: La La Land

  • Luckily for Manchester by the Sea and Moonlight, La La Land was in another category as it will be strong competition to those movies later on.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture , Drama:
Casey Affleck , Manchester By The Sea
Joel Edgerton , Loving
Andrew Garfield , Hacksaw Ridge
Viggo Mortensen ,  Captain Fantastic
Denzel Washington , Fences

Should win: Casey Affleck

  • He’s pretty much been anointed as the frontrunner for good reason. His understated performance of a man dealing with his personal demons brought on by grief was the most compelling one I’ve seen.

Will win: Casey Affleck

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture , Drama:
Amy Adams , Arrival
Jessica Chastain , Miss Sloane
Isabelle Huppert , Elle
Ruth Negga , Loving
Natalie Portman , Jackie

Should win: Jessica Chastain

  • Without Chastain, there’d be no movie. Her performance of a ruthless, ambitious, lobbyist could have gone either way but she made her likable by giving her some needed depth.

Will win: Natalie Portman

  • I haven’t seen Jackie so I am just deferring to the general consensus and when have they ever been wrong?

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture , Musical or Comedy:
Colin Farrell , The Lobster (Guest Review)
Ryan Gosling , La La Land
Hugh Grant , Florence Foster Jenkins
Jonah Hill , War Dogs
Ryan Reynolds , Deadpool

Should win: Ryan Reynolds

  • Without him, there’d be no movie. He was the lifeforce of the movie. Shouldn’t he at least get some credit for that?

Will win: Ryan Gosling

  • I’m sensing a La La Land wave. Consider him lucky being in a Musical or Comedy category since this may be his only chance to win an award.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture , Musical or Comedy:
Annette Bening , 20th Century Women
Lily Collins , Rules Don’t Apply
Hailee Steinfeld , The Edge of Seventeen
Emma Stone , La La Land
Meryl Streep , Florence Foster Jenkins

Should win: Hailee Steinfeld

  • She singlehandedly carried the movie with her charisma and comedic timing.

Will win: Emma Stone

  • I’m sensing a La La Land wave but it won’t end here. Not only can she sing but her performance as an ambitious dreamer was very deep and emotional.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
Mahershala Ali , Moonlight
Jeff Bridges , Hell Or High Water (Guest Review)
Simon Helberg , Florence Foster Jenkins
Dev Patel , Lion
Aaron Taylor-Johnson , Nocturnal Animals

Should win: Michael Shannon

  • He technically wasn’t nominated but I still thought he should get some recognition.

Will win: Mahershala Ali

  • Part of this was because Michael Shannon wasn’t nominated but he was still great in Moonlight. His deep performance as Chiron’s drug-dealing mentor was memorable, even in limited screen time.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture:
Viola Davis , Fences
Naomie Harris , Moonlight
Nicole Kidman , Lion
Octavia Spencer , Hidden Figures
Michelle Williams , Manchester by the Sea

Should win: Naomie Harris

  • Her performance was very moving, showing her downward spiral from drug addiction. She went from caring to downright nasty very quickly. Her character wasn’t a caricature and she gave her depth. Despite her addiction, part of her still cared for Chiron.

Will win: Viola Davis

  • I haven’t seen Fences so I’m deferring to the consensus on this one as well.

Winner:

Best Director , Motion Picture:
Damien Chazelle , La La Land
Tom Ford , Nocturnal Animals
Mel Gibson , Hacksaw Ridge
Barry Jenkins , Moonlight
Kenneth Lonergan , Manchester by the Sea

Should win: Barry Jenkins

  • Again, Moonlight was one of the best examples of pure storytelling in a long time and he played a big part in that.

Will win: Damien Chazelle

  • Continuing with the La La Land wave.

Winner:

Best Original Screenplay:
La La Land
Nocturnal Animals
Moonlight
Manchester By The Sea
Hell Or High Water (Guest Review)

Should win: Moonlight

  • Moonlight was a compelling story full of real characters and reel-feeling situations.

Will win: Moonlight

Winner:

Best Motion Picture , Foreign Language:
Divines , France
Elle , France
Neruda , Chile
The Salesman , Iran/France
Toni Erdmann , Germany

Winner:

Best Motion Picture , Animated:
Kubo and the Two Strings
Moana
My Life As A Zucchini
Sing
Zootopia

Should win: Kubo and the Two Strings

  • A beautiful animated film where you felt like part of the story instead of being told one.

Will win: Kubo and the Two Strings

Winner:

Best Original Song , Motion Picture:
“Can’t Stop The Feeling”, Trolls
“City Of Stars”, La La Land
“Faith”, Sing
“Gold”, Gold
“How Far I’ll Go”, Moana

Should win: “City Of Stars”

  • Hard to bet against La La Land but Can’t Stop The Feeling kind of has a chance.

Will win: “City Of Stars”

Winner:

Best Original Score , Motion Picture:
Nicholas Britell , Moonlight
Justin Hurwitz , La La Land
Johann Johannsson , Arrival
Dustin O’Halloran, Hauschka, Lion
Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, Benjamin Wallfisch , Hidden Figures

Should win: Arrival

  • It had a very beautiful, immersive score that just fit well with the rest of the movie.

Will win: La La Land

  • It should be a big night for La La Land.

Winner:

Best Television Series , Drama:
The Crown
Game Of Thrones
Stranger Things
This Is Us
Westworld

Should win: Stranger Things

  • Stranger Things was by far the best thing on television this year across all platforms. It was unique, masterfully done, and downright enjoyable.

Will win: Game of Thrones

  • Game of Thrones is an award season juggernaut. It’s a great show and deserving of every award it gets. Season six wasn’t the best they’ve done but it still had some of the best episodes the show has ever done.

Winner:

Best Television Series , Musical or Comedy:
Atlanta
Black-ish
Mozart In The Jungle
Transparent
Veep

Should win: Veep

  • I don’t think Veep ever gets the recognition it deserves. It is one of the best comedies TV has seen in a long time lead by a great cast.

Will win: Black-ish

  • I think Black-ish will win because it is something different while not being too different (if that makes sense) It’s standard network comedy that takes a different perspective and I think it will be rewarded.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series , Drama:
Rami Malek , Mr. Robot
Bob Odenkirk , Better Call Saul
Matthew Rhys , The Americans
Liev Schreiber , Ray Donovan
Billy Bob Thornton , Goliath

Should win: Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul

  • Bob Odenkirk is one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood. He can do anything. He’s funny, witty, serious, and kills any role he’s in. He plays the lead role in Better Call Saul perfectly and the spinoff series is already better than Breaking Bad (Yes, I just said that!)

Will win: Bob Odenkirk – Better Call Saul

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress In A Television Series , Drama:
Caitriona Balfe , Outlander
Claire Foy , The Crown
Keri Russell , The Americans
Winona Ryder , Stranger Things
Evan Rachel Wood , Westworld

Should win: Winona Ryder – Stranger Things

  • Like I said, Stranger Things was the best thing on TV this year and it wouldn’t have been so without Winona Ryder. Her role has the devastated/psycho mother was amazing.

Will win: Winona Ryder – Stranger Things

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series , Musical or Comedy:
Anthony Anderson , Black-ish
Gael García Bernal , Mozart in the Jungle
Donald Glover , Atlanta
Nick Nolte , Graves
Jeffrey Tambor , Transparent

Should win: Donald Glover – Atlanta

  • Donald Glover is under the radar with how funny he is. Atlanta is unique and very well done and he is one of the main reasons for that.

Will win: Jeffrey Tambor – Transparent

  • Jeffrey Tambor is an amazing actor and he has taken a successful career to new heights with his role as Maura Pfefferman. I think he’ll win not just for his great performance in Transparent, but also as a culmination of a great career.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series , Musical or Comedy:
Rachel Bloom , Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Julia Louis-Dreyfus , Veep
Sarah Jessica Parker , Divorce
Issa Rae , Insecure
Gina Rodriguez , Jane the Virgin
Tracee Ellis-Ross , Black-ish

Should win: Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep

  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus is the best comedic actress ever and her performance in Veep backs it up completely. This award shouldn’t even be up for debate.

Will win:

  • Julia Louis-Dreyfus – Veep

Winner:

Best Limited Series:
American Crime
The Dresser
The Night Manager
The Night Of
The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Should win:

  • The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
    • The People v. O.J is going to bring home a lot of awards this year. It told a great story with some amazing performances and is deserving of every award it gets.

Will win:

  • The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:
Riz Ahmed , The Night Of
Bryan Cranston , All The Way
Tom Hiddleston , The Night Manager
John Turturro , The Night Of
Courtney B Vance , The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Should win: Courtney B. Vance – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

  • Courtney B. Vance played an extremely convincing Johnnie Cochran in one of the best things on TV this year.

Will win: Courtney B. Vance – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Felicity Huffman , American Crime
Riley Keough , The Girlfriend Experience
Sarah Paulson , The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Charlotte Rampling , London Spy
Kerry Washington , Confirmation

Should win: Sarah Paulson – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

  • Sarah Paulson might be the best actress in Hollywood right now. She absolutely kills any role she is in, including The People v. O.J. She was gritty, emotional, and powerful and is by far the most deserving of this award.

Will win: Sarah Paulson – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:

Olivia Colman , The Night Manager
Lena Headey , Game Of Thrones
Chrissy Metz , This Is Us
Mandy Moore , This Is Us
Thandie Newton , Westworld

Should win: Chrissy Metz – This is Us

  • I didn’t expect This is Us to be as good as it is and Chrissy Metz is part of the reason it is. It wouldn’t be the same without her strong and emotional performance.

Will win: Lena Heady – Game of Thrones

  • Game of Thrones has some of the strongest female characters on television and Lena Heady’s performance as Cersei Lannister is a big reason for it. She is powerful and intimidating and it one of best thing about TV’s best show.

Winner:

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television:
Sterling K Brown , The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story
Hugh Laurie , The Night Manager
John Lithgow , The Crown
Christian Slater , Mr. Robot
John Travolta , The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Should win: Sterling K. Brown – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

  • Like I said, The People v. O.J. is going to cleanup and the Golden Globes this year and Sterling K. Brown is going to help with that. His role has Chris Darden was just as strong and powerful as some of the others.

Will win: Sterling K. Brown – The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story

Winner:
