Since La La Land was released to international acclaim, musicals have had a little comeback. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone were great but what about at a pair of singing, carnivorous mermaid sisters. Yes, you heard that right and no, it’s not from here because I don’t think anyone would have thought of this. In the first musical to come out of Poland (IMDB trivia), the sisters are drawn ashore in an alternate ’80s Poland to explore the wonders and temptations of life on land. Their talents lead them to become overnight nightclub singing sensations. When one of them falls in love with a human, their bond becomes tested. This definitely takes what we think about musicals and takes it in a completely different direction. This looks interesting but it probably won’t be something that I will have a chance to see in a long time. For everyone else, it will be released at New York’s IFC Center on Feb. 1, followed by a national rollout (EW).
