Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 3: A Life Spent Review

Synopsis: Daisy decides she will rescue Simmons, even though she must risk everything to do so. (IMDB)

After the events of last week’s premiere, it was time to slow things down a little bit but there were still a few developments here as we learned more about the inner workings of the station.

The episode started with Kasius entertaining the guests that arrived at the end of the last episode. Meanwhile, Simmons was tasked to take care of a young inhuman girl. She looked to be powerful but she didn’t know how to control her powers so Simmons tried to help her control her powers. She was then pulled away so she can participate in a gladiator battle against a champion of one of the visitors, a much larger man. The girl was taking a beating until Simmons gave her the confidence to use her powers and she defeated her challenger quite handedly. Based on her performance, she was sold for a high price.

Coulson, Mack, and Yo-Yo were getting used to their new predicament, working for Grill. Grill believed that Virgil was stealing from him so he sent one of his people to go with Tess (Eve Harlow), Coulson, May, and Mack on a salvage run. Their plan was to look for a location of something in space from Virgil’s journal. While that was happening, Yo-Yo stayed behind to steal a scroll to give to Daisy so she can look for Simmons.

On the ship, Coulson found a radio that Virgil had hidden before Grill’s guy tried to stop them. This didn’t last long but Tess was worried because they attacked a superior. Tess wanted them to get rid of him but everyone else thought otherwise. Then they picked up a transmission whose source appeared to be coming from what was left of the Earth. Once they returned, they got rid of Grill’s guy by having Yo-Yo plant a gun on him which was against the rules.

Deke was still struggling with the fact that Daisy may have been responsible for destroying Earth. When she denied it once again, Deke brought up the idea of parallel universes which presents the possibility that this season may also be taking place in a parallel universe. Despite his many warnings otherwise, Daisy was not interested in playing the long game, determined to storm the upper levels to save Simmons. On the way, she fought off a few Kree but when she got to the top, she was trapped and incapacitated by some sort of gas. Deke had warned Kasius of her arrival and pretty much gave her up to him. He already sold another inhuman so she Daisy would probably be worth a lot more.

The last scene was of Coulson waking up on the ship, getting ready to go to work. Mack built a device to amplify the earlier transmission. The transmission was of a man asking about them. The last shot was a glimpse of the Earth’s surface where Grill’s guy, seemingly alone, was attack by a pack of creatures.

Overall, this was a good, albeit slower, episode that may have given us some more answers but it felt like it was just planting the seeds for a later payoff. Where are the transmissions coming from and who’s sending them? Is it Fitz? Maybe Deke isn’t such a nice guy after all, his motives aren’t that clear at this point. Maybe the betrayal was just part of his long game, like how this season has gone so far. Hopefully we’ll get some answers pertaining to why they are there soon.
