2017 Best Foreign Language Film Oscar Shortlist

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced this year’s shortlist of potential Oscar contenders for best foreign-language film.

A record 92 films were submitted for consideration by their respective countries with the final shortlist including many expected entries but not without some surprising snubs. Films like “First They Killed My Father,” “BPM (Beats Per Minute)” and “Thelma” failed to make the cut.

  • Lebanon, The Insult, Ziad Doueiri, director
  • Russia, Loveless, Andrey Zvyagintsev, director
  • Senegal, Félicité, Alain Gomis, director
  • South Africa, The Wound, John Trengove, director
  • Sweden, The Square, Ruben Östlund, director

The 90th Academy Award nominations will be announced on Tuesday, January 23, 2018 and the ceremony will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 on ABC.
