This week was a  slight departure from the usual suspense and thrilling episodes we have become accustomed to. Picking up right where last week left off, we found ourselves in the aftermath of Victor being shot by Janet. And when things go south in this world, who they gonna call? PRIDE.

The gang gathered together to figure out how to deal with Victor being shot, while simultaneously handling a frazzled and confused Chase.  The story became a bit convoluted as the episode progressed and felt slow and repetitive as the group tried to come to a solution on how to handle Victor.

Meanwhile, Nico and Alex came to heads when Nico began questioning Alex about her sister, Amy. As she learns, Amy spoke to Alex the night she died. Furthermore, Alex was aware of the danger Amy was in–aware that she that hacked into Wizard. As the episode continues, Alex and Nico began to suspect that perhaps Amy’s suicide was staged–that someone else was responsible for her untimely death. This led Nico on a hunt for Amy’s old phone, hoping it possessed vital information that would help understand what happened.

As promised, Dale and Stacey dropped Molly off at her relative’s house, where she was to stay until further notice. What appeared to be a nightmare come true, ended up leading Molly to a message her parents had left behind for her–along with a mysterious VHS tape.

In an attempt to save Victor, the Yorkes’ are brought in to treat him. When this proved to be unsuccessful, Leslie opted to call Frank in to try and attempt revival via his “magic” gloves–a feat that failed miserably killing Victor. However, unbeknownst to the group, Tina called Jonah in to save the day who suggested that Victor is revived as he was. This part of the episode presented in a boring and confusing manner as the group struggled to decide on who would be the sacrifice. As they fought back and forth, it got monotonous and took away from the episode’s point. In a desperate romantic gesture, Robert decides he will get into the box so Janet doesn’t have to, however, Tina destroys the other capsule so a sacrifice can no longer be performed.

While the parents struggle to figure out what to do, Alex finally decrypted the video that would incriminate their parents once and for all. However, Karolina and Chase refuse to turn their parents in, which resulted in a childish fist fight between Chase and Alex. In a rageful moment, Chase destroys the laptop, and with it any evidence linking their parents to the criminal activities of PRIDE.

In the final moments of the episode, a flashback takes us back to the night of Amy’s death, when she is frantically trying to escape the house. This urgency matches a text Amy received on her phone to get out because “he found out”. However, it appears it was too late for her to run as advised as the episode closed out to an unknown person blocking Amy into her room.

While Runaways has truly been quite the entertaining and engaging series thus far, this week’s fell short of expectations. The entire episode focused on bringing back a character that no one is fond of, and can frankly do without. The dynamic of the group felt shifted as a result, making the story a bit boring and mundane. While this may be a “filler” episode in terms of excitement and suspense, there were a few key moments that will set up the story for the weeks to come–Amy’s “staged” suicide, Molly’s VHS tape discovery, and the case of the broken laptop. Here’s to hoping we can get back into the swing of things next week!

Score: 6.5/10
