Marvel’s Runaways Season 1 Episode 9: Doomsday Review

And just like that, we are one week away from the season one finale of Marvel’s Runaways. It has been quite the season and as the drama and suspense are inching to a close, there is so much left to discuss.

A flashback to ten years prior revealed the fate of the Hernandez couple, aka Molly’s parents. In a frantic state, we are shown Molly’s parents making sense of their situation as a young Molly is playing with some unusual rocks. As we quickly learn, a fire in the lab takes their lives, however, Molly manages to survive. It appears this may be the result of the magic rocks she was playing with, the very same that may have given her the super-strength powers she has now. In a dramatic twist, we see Leslie walk away from the lab as it perishes in the fire, telling Tina “they were taken care of.”

Meanwhile, in the present, Robert returned home to Tina post his extra-marital affair drama and Karolina decided to confide in Frank about PRIDE and their shady activities. The group, however, was still recovering from Chase destroying the laptop that would incriminate their parents. Feeling distant and annoyed, Gert decided they would all attend the dance together, because they are still friends, despite whatever was going on. In fact, Alex finally gave the group a nickname, “Runaways”.

This episode brought more clarity to the school that PRIDE has been working on, and revealed its true purpose. With the drill officially breaking ground, PRIDE gathered at the construction site.

Molly ran away from her new home with the VHS tape her parents left behind for her. With Alex’s help, the group was able to watch the video, only to learn that Molly’s parents heeded a warning about PRIDE. There is something Jonah is trying to dig up but by doing so he can disrupt a fault that would unleash catastrophic seismic events. The group quickly learns that the parents are using the construction site as a cover to dig into the ground. In an effort to stop their parents once and for all, they decide to use the dance as a cover for going to the construction site and destroying everything they can.

On a side note, Gert and Chase finally had their romantic moment and it was marvelous! Not to mention, Karolina finally gave into her feelings over Nico and kissed her. Yay for love stories while saving the world!

While the kids were crazy in love and plotting against their parents, Jonah called for a PRIDE meeting to inform the parents that the kids know about everything. While they rushed over to the construction site, the kids went to work destroying machinery, equipment, and filling up the huge hole in the ground the drill had made. And just as they were attempting to leave, the parents showed up, cryptic and pissed off.

While the parents thought they had the upper hand, they quickly learn that the kids are not looking to back down. In fact, in the final moments of the episode, the kids revealed their individual powers and strengths, catching PRIDE by surprise. Go Runaways!

This episode was an exciting change from last week’s, bringing everything to an epic stand-off between the kids and the parents. The entire season has been leading up to this point, and with the finale next week, it will be very exciting to see where it all ends. This episode highlighted everyone’s strengths once again and built upon the excitement of the PRIDE mystery. One of the positive elements of this week’s episode was tying up loose ends that have been trudging through most of the season (Gert & Chase’s hook-up, the mystery of the Hernandez’ death, etc). Going into next week, there are many things yet to be answered, clarified, and resolved but if the entire season has been any indication, the finale will be one hell of an episode to watch.
