Agents of SHIELD Season 5 Episode 16: Inside Voices Review

Who would’ve thought gravitonium was alive? Coulson and Talbot escape, Ruby is moody, Robin is back, and there may be a rift growing withing Shield.

Coulson is still in Hale’s captivity but he’s not giving up just yet despite her removing all comforts from his cell. She’s given up her Air Force uniform as there’s no point in hiding anymore. She was interested in performing a little science experiment with Creel by having him bond with some gravitonium. Still upset about being slighted by her mother, Ruby is in a mood. Hale’s experiment failed as the gravitonium grabbed Creel and he began to see flashes of Franklin Hall.

The younger von Strucker was working hard at deciphering his father’s journals for information that could help in building his chamber. An impatient Ruby wanted him to work faster. Hall continued to be in Creel’s head which took him to Coulson. The gravitonium wanted him dead but Coulson brought up Talbot who Creel believed to be dead. Coulson told him that Talbot was still alive and a prisoner somewhere else in the facility.

Coulson and Creel find Talbot and decide to escape. To stop them, Hale sent Ruby after them but she needed Creel alive. While engaging a set of guards, one of them punches Coulson in the chest and stops his heart, however, he was saved again by Creel. After Ruby caught up to them, Creel held her off so Coulson and Talbot could use the alien transportation device to escape. Creel and Ruby continued to fight until Hale ordered them to stop. Hale then sent Ruby after Coulson and Talbot who were now in a wintry forest near a mountain.

Meanwhile, Yo-Yo was testing out her new arms on a punching bag which worried Mack who wanted her to take it easy. Deke and Fitz began to bond over their new connection while Simmons asked him about the future which was not much. With Coulson gone, the team was in disarray. Daisy was the reluctant leader who had a different approach. A rift began to form about which direction they take. Simmons thought they should pursue Fitz’s lead but daisy wanted none of it as she was still not over what he did to her. Daisy was more interested in finding Robin. Instead, she enlists Yo-Yo by bonding over their apparent invincibility.

Once they picked up Robin, Polly revealed that Robin’s visions have been overwhelming her and she had stopped drawing or talking. Her last picture was of her dying in the future. When she sees May in the cockpit, she calls her mommy. Robin began drawing again and revealed that Coulson can put all the pieces together. Her latest drawing was of Coulson and Talbot standing in front of mountains.

Polly asked May about her connection to Ruby but she said she didn’t know. She knew that she isn’t in Robin’s future so she asked May to take care of Robin.

With Daisy gone, Mack was in charge so Yo-Yo asked Mack to let Fitz out but he refused to let either she or Fitz go. She then brought him to Fitz and Simmons so Simmons can perform an experiment to prove that they can’t die. After performing the experiment, she looked like she had made a grave mistake but it was just a ruse to take care of Mack. However, the experiment was also real.

The last scene was a flashback where Raina handed Quinn gravitonium but it instead consumed Quinn.

Overall, this was a good episode that took a step back from last week’s episode but still offered plenty of action with Simmons’ ruse being the highlight. Daisy now knows where Coulson is and it will be interesting to see how long it will take to find him and what more they will learn from Robin, however, the more intriguing storyline is that of Fitz, Simmons, and Yo-Yo doing their own thing. The flashback ending was a surprise for sure. Who else is in the gravitonium?
