“Let It Burn”starts off with a busy restaurant where a disgruntled employee reluctantly lights a sparkler for a birthday cake then throws the blown out match into the nearby garbage. Pruitt sits in a hospital room with Bailey discussing the problems he is dealing with. She says if there was anything bad he would be admitted to the hospital, which causes Pruitt to quickly get up and leave. Andy talks with her dad about what happened at the Incinerator test, breaking code against the May Day and now being dead last in the race for captain.

Bishop and Andy go to visit a homeless shelter to give out vaccines where they run into Bishop’s brother Mason. They argue over what’s right for him and Bishop leaves. Montgomery brings Victoria to his meditation class to help her calm down when they run into Grant and there is obvious chemistry between them. Ben and Bailey come to the station where she asks about where Pruitt is and he decides to pry a bit. She asks Ben to keep an eye on Pruitt. Everyone knows about Andy’s failed test and they can’t help show it, but she wants the day to move forward. As she gives out tasks for the day, Miller and Ben both notice Pruitt acting a bit strange. They talk about their mutual concern and decide to corner their former captain. Pruitt becomes a bit hostile, but as he plans to leave Andy enters and he stumbles causing Andy to forcible take him to the hospital herself.

At the hospital, Bailey reveals that Pruitt’s treatment is no longer working and that they need to up his dosage. It comes out that Pruitt lied to Andy about going to the hospital and Bailey urges him to listen to his daughter. Ben tries to talk to her and calm her down, but she doesn’t want to be coddle. Montgomery and Victoria visit Edith, the woman from the retirement home, who is experiencing shortness of breath. But it’s all a ploy for her to sell her grandson Grant to Montgomery. She even went as far as calling Grant to show up for a meet cute. Clever girl. As Bailey and Pruitt discuss the next steps, Ben returns to discover that Andy never came back to the room and quickly runs off searching for her.

Back at the station, Gibson is doing a disaster drill with the Seattle PD and turns out Ryan is one of the two police officers participating. They start to bicker over the validity of the disaster drill while Miller and the other officer look on. Edith continues to try to set up Montgomery and Grant, talking about them and how great they would be to their faces. Montgomery apologizes for seeming disinterested and sets up a date with Grant for the following day. In the car, Montgomery starts to have a meltdown about his fear associated with dating again after losing a partner already. But there’s no time to talk about that now as Bishop and Montgomery are doing some fire drills with Victoria. She feels pushed and the fear starts to set in causing her to lash out at Bishop, but there’s a fire they need to get to.

Ben finds Andy and pulls her aside to try to keep her levelheaded. She decides he is right and goes to talk to her dad. Andy confronts her father about his lack of opening up about what is going on. He wants her to take a step back, but she promised her mom she would take care of him. However, as they talk he passes out and the monitor starts beeping. Bailey discovers it was an allergic reaction, but she recommends they continue treatment. While Andy is against it, Pruitt decides he wants to fight and includes Andy in all meetings going forward.

Meanwhile at the structure fire, the crew finds out that the restaurant set fire suddenly and that there are a ton more people still inside. Gibson puts on his mask and races inside to safe them, but Ryan decides he should run in and play hero too. They are able to pull person after person out as Gibson berates Ryan for risking his life. The fire becomes too dangerous to enter anymore, but Ryan wants to try to save more people. As Ripley arrives to watch, Gibson orders the firefighters to surround and drown the building. That is until a woman and her baby appear on the roof of the building.

Gibson makes the call to climb an unstable ladder to rescue them. While the building starts to break, Ryan tells the woman that she needs to drop her baby to him so she can jump to the ladder. She starts to panic, but Gibson reassures her that his friend Ryan will catch her baby. As the baby drops, Ryan manages to catch it and Gibson saves the mother. Ryan and Gibson share a moment of mutual respect as Victoria approaches the burning building to tackle her fear with Bishop by her side. Bishop returns to the homeless shelter where she finds her brother and offers to help her brother in whatever way she can regardless of what she thinks is best for him.

The following morning, Montgomery and Victoria stumble upon Grant who’s at the station waiting for their date. Montgomery explains he doesn’t date and goes off on a tangent about death, but Grant reassures him about everything and the breakfast is back on. At home, Bailey confronts Ben about hiding his big calls from her because she wants them to be open and he obliges. Andy sits over her father’s bed when Miller shows up to give her some rest while he stays with Pruitt. As Victoria and Bishop go for a run they pass by a beautiful mural painted by Mason who has packed up and left. The episode ends as Andy returns home to find Ryan bursting in talking about the unbelievable night he had followed by an intense make out session between these childhood lovers.

Captain’s Log

  • Who will end up becoming Captain of Station 19?
  • Will Pruitt Herrera’s cancer take a turn for the worst?
  • Will Montgomery and Grant become a thing or will Montgomery continue to let his past haunt him?
  • Will Maya reconcile with her brother Mason?
  • How will Victoria beat her fear of fire?
  • Will Ben continue to be open with Bailey?
  • Will Ben decide firefighting is not for him and change careers yet again? He did not seem good during this week’s call.
  • Will the dynamic at Station 19 change with Gibson and Andy’s secret coming out?

Overall, this was a phenomenal episode. The relationship between Andy and Pruitt is the center of this episode and these actors bring their A-game as emotions run at an all-time high. Their dynamic has always been the focus of this show, but here they are able to dive deeper into why it is that way and the revelations they both have because of it. Meanwhile, the rest of the crew continues to deal with their own stories, which progress nicely without taking away from the tone set by the Herrera story. With Pruitt’s ailing health it will be interesting to see who makes captain and if he ends up living to see them don that role.

Score: 8.5/10
