The season four finale of The Flash–my oh my. It was fairly predictable in terms of what happened and it wasn’t the least bit surprising. Please let season five make up for the hot mess of season four, please!

The finale begins with Captain Singh calling Barry with good news regarding his job, thanks to Iris’s expose on DeVoe. But his call is interrupted when DeVoe uses Kilgore’s powers and Harry’s Thinking Cap to initiate the Enlightenment. The entire city’s power is knocked out, and thus begins DeVoe’s takeover.

In the midst of all this, Cecile and Joe head to S.T.A.R. Labs because she is in labor. Luckily, Caitlin has all the necessary supplies to deliver the baby there. Cisco learns that the rest of the dark matter that was stored at the labs was stolen by DeVoe and as he is telling Barry, Iris walks in with a surprise guest–Marlize.

Marlize has an idea to take down her husband which requires an Inception-style plan to enter his mind and locate the last remaining ounce of good left inside of him. Using Cecile’s mind-reading powers, they should be able to transfer Barry’s consciousness into DeVoe’s mind.

They are successful at having Barry enter DeVoe’s mind when Barry finds himself in front of the bus moments before it was hit with dark matter. When Cecile starts having contractions, it momentarily breaks the communication link between Barry and the team.

Meanwhile, Wells is struggling to contribute and puts on his thinking cap–an extremely dangerous move considering he has almost completely lost his ability to think. However, he tells Cisco to tell Barry to find the place where Marlize and DeVoe fell in love. When Barry arrives at the romantic picnic, he doesn’t find DeVoe there, but does find someone else–Ralph!

DeVoe shows up but Barry takes Ralph and escapes just as Cecile tells the team she read DeVoe’s thoughts and he is headed to S.T.A.R. Labs. When DeVoe arrives, he is unable to cause any harm because the team is surrounded by a protective force field, and Marlize transports them to a pocket dimension.

When Ralph and Barry arrive at Oxford, the next location where they believe good DeVoe is, they find him–but he is dead. Seeing as few options exist, Ralph tries to convince Barry to leave DeVoe’s consciousness but Barry refuses. He realizes the only way to win is to transport the good part of DeVoe through the nexus–meaning they need to take Ralph through it because it will cause DeVoe to lose control.

As Barry and Ralph near the nexus, they have to fight off DeVoe clones before Barry ultimately crosses into the nexus with Ralph. Meanwhile, DeVoe shows up in the pocket dimension and tries to take down Team Flash and almost chokes out Cecile.

DeVoe is finally defeated as Barry returns to his own body and Marlize takes them back to S.T.A.R. Labs. Cecile’s water breaks but as the team goes to the med bay, DeVoe’s chair lights up and a hologram of him appears. Marlize bids him farewell and finally pulls the plug–killing her husband for good.

However, DeVoe thought ahead to this moment and initiated a kill-switch in case of his death. The satellites come crashing into Central City as Barry rushes out to save the world once again. And while he attempts to thwart the final satellite from hitting Central City, time begins to reverse. When he tries to take it down again, he is joined by another mysterious speedster that helps him out.

Back at the lab, Cecile has given birth to the baby and Marlize gives Cisco the tech needed to help reverse the damage to Wells’ brain. And while his intelligence doesn’t go back to what it once was, he realizes he needs to go spend time with this daughter and bids farewell to the team.

The team celebrates the birth of the new baby back at home, and even Wally shows up for the celebration. And in the final moments of the finale, we learn the identity of the Mystery girl–Nora Allen (Jessica Parker Kennedy), Iris and Barry’s daughter from the future. And apparently, she’s made a mistake.

This twist was so expected and was not surprising whatsoever. For most of the season, fans speculated that she was their daughter and alas, this was the case. Overall, the finale wasn’t really all that exciting, which doesn’t come as a surprise because the season, in general, was a bit of a fail. Here’s to hoping season five picks up the slack!

Score: 6.5/10
