Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger is an interesting story, to say the least. While it almost has the vibe of Marvel’s Runaways, it manages to set itself apart because it focuses on only two characters, Tandy (Olivia Holt), and Tyrone (Aubrey Joseph). The series premiere introduces us to these characters and gives us an insight into who they are and where they come from.

Tandy’s past and present is rather depressing after the loss of her father as a child and now lives in poverty on the streets, or in a church father. When her father passed away, he was blamed for being responsible for a rig explosion that involved the company he worked for–Roxxon Corp. Tandy’s life went from 0 to 60 within moments when she and her mother (Andrea Roth) lost everything and were forced to fend for themselves. To make money, Tandy runs cons with her boyfriend, managing to steal money whichever way she can.

The other half of Cloak & Dagger is Tyrone, who plays basketball for his school, and lost his brother as a kid. His brother was shot by a cop, but no records exist of the cop, and the reason for his brother’s murder is listed as drugs. And one day Tyrone finds himself in the trunk of the cop’s car–because he teleported there. Say what?

So how exactly do Tyrone and Tandy meet? They cross paths at a party, and of course, as Tandy tries to steal his wallet. A moment of glimpses reminds that they actually have met once before–the night of the rig explosion as a kid. It was Tyrone who saved Tandy from the lake when her father’s car drove into it. And it was that very incident that gave the both of them their powers.

When we reach the second episode of the premiere, we start to see more of Tandy’s home life with her mother. Things are very different than when she was a kid, and her relationship with her mother has greatly suffered from her father’s passing and legal battles. Tyrone musters up the courage to face-off with the mysterious cop that shot and killed his brother, but before he can shoot the cop, he ends up teleporting once again. This time he appears in front of Tandy’s car as she is trying to skip out of town.

We see quite a bit of Tandy’s boyfriend in this episode, but learn that he wants a future for them and she doesn’t quite see that. Meanwhile, Tyrone is struggling to keep his mother (Gloria Reuben) happy because she doesn’t want to lose him like they lost his brother. It’s an interesting insight into relationships with two characters that are struggling to figure out who they are–literally.

Both Tyrone and Tandy have no idea how to harness their powers or what exactly they mean, but it will be interesting to see how they navigate through it all. A romantic relationship between them is inevitable, so the only question is how this bitter friendship is going to blossom into something more. If you can’t fall in love over gaining superpowers during a freak accident, then how else will you?

Score: 7.5/10
