We have reached the penultimate episode of Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger, and things are so complicated right now, but we love it. This week Tandy is stealing everyone’s hopes, while Ty is dealing with his parents learning about the true nature of Billy’s death. Both characters are internally struggling in their own ways, but Tandy is really falling apart after seeing her mother’s horrendous memory of being slapped by her father.

Tandy is emotionally distraught because clearing her father’s name is all she has ever wanted, but now she feels resentment, betrayal, and anger towards his secret life and personality. After getting Connors to confess, Tyrone had his share of issues this week when his parents finally learned that Ty was telling the truth all these years.

Ty is extremely frustrated because his parents don’t seem to acknowledge that they refused to believe him, and are shaking off the truth. Both Ty and Tandy sort of regress this week in their journey, but it’s enticing to see them figure out what path they will choose to take. Tandy doesn’t really take the path we hoped she would and begins to return her life of conning, and literally stealing the hopes of people around her. Her hopes were stolen, so why not theirs?

With the money she gathers, she finally bails Liam out, who is clearly bitter over her long absence. And while they have a tender moment, or so it seems anyway, it is interrupted when Ty shows up in her hope vision with Liam. At this point, Ty has had a hell of a day with his parents over the Billy reveal, and his frustration grows when he knocks out one of his teammates in school.

Ty tries to confront Tandy, and let her know he isn’t giving up or going anywhere, no matter how much she insists on cutting him out of her life. She is at one of her lowest points and is suddenly in a place where she thinks if she pushes everyone away, it will reaffirm the idea that she doesn’t deserve them.

Ty goes home to have a heart-to-heart conversation with his mother which is all the feels as she confesses that getting justice for Billy would have been too difficult because he was a black boy shot by a cop. She chose to focus on Ty and put Billy behind her. But Ty will not take that explanation and said justice has to be sought out because there will be a generation after him too. This show seriously is so deep.

The episode ends on a crazy note when in the middle of Ty’s conversation with his mom, the police show up to arrest him for Fuch’s murder (Uh, what?!). Obviously, this has Connors written all over it.

On the flip side, Tandy returns home to speak with her mother about the physical abuse from her father but comes home to see her mother being held at gunpoint by one of Scarborough’s men. Goodness, what an episode! And now we must wait an entire week to see how everything goes down–will Tandy dig deep for some hope and listen to Ty or is she a goner for good now?

Honestly, Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger truly has truly been mind-blowing over the course of the season with its perfect subtleties and character nuances and bringing social issues front and center without being overbearing. It’s truly a remarkable show, and it will be exciting to see the season finale next week, and while this is sad, at least we’re getting a second season! Also, side note, did anyone else notice the painting of Stan Lee that Tandy was looking at?

Score: 8/10
