This episode of This Is Us is titled according to Kate’s story but it’s not entirely that. After last week’s family feud surrounding Kate’s decision to do IVF, this week involves the actual procedure taking place. Randall has amends to make after abruptly confronting Kate about saying that she is the only one that can carry on a piece of their Dad.

A confrontation results in an argument with Kate storming away and Randall standing there, speechless. Thanks to Beth, he speaks to Kate on the phone the night before her surgery but isn’t able to complete the conversation due to Kate’s frustration with the family treating the whole ordeal in a frightening, annoying manner.

On a whim, Randall decides to fly out to Los Angeles to be with Kate during her surgery, which gives Toby some much-needed support. Randall and Toby have a touching moment as Randall talks about his anxiety and Toby opens up about taking antidepressants. A flashback also takes us to a conversation between William and Beth who are discussing Randall’s anxiety attack.

In this conversation, William tells Beth she has to learn to put herself first sometimes and can’t always set her problems aside. This comes in handy in this week’s episode as Beth is laid off from her job due to budget issues. But Randall isn’t quick to see her distress because he flies back home after learning that one of the girls from the rec center was beaten up for her phone.

He feels angry and flustered over the councilman not doing his job and decides he is going to run against him. Luckily, Beth doesn’t keep her being laid off a secret and tells him what is going on. She deserves support and attention to and we’re glad to see that said something about it.

Kevin finds himself wondering why he doesn’t know about Jack’s time in Vietnam and is faced with the devastation surrounding it during an interview. His movie has been a success and as a result, he’s been doing many interviews, but this one in particular really took him aback when he was asked about his father. With Zoe’s help, he starts to look into Jack’s past and pulls out the box of items that Rebecca had after their house fire.

He starts to look up people that were in Vietnam alongside Jack and even reaches out to one via email. We get a glimpse of this man receiving the email so it will be interesting to see if there is any reply from him.

In the past, we learn about who the mystery man on Rebecca’s porch is. It turns out he is an ex from the past and the two shared a serious relationship. Momentarily, Rebecca welcomes this man back into her life and is swept away by the idea of moving to New York City with him to pursue her music career. But there’s still a feeling within her that is thinking about Jack, and it only gets stronger when she happens to run into him at the store.

Jack, who is taking his mom to a friend’s, is dealing with his alcoholic dad and after another unnecessary argument, he decides to take his mom to a friend’s. But not before they buy some cake first where they run into Rebecca. Within 24 hours, Rebecca contemplates chasing her dreams in NYC and then decides that maybe she should follow the instinct she has about Jack. She tracks him down and finds him, and the two share the start of many beautiful moments–washing dishes together. Something she never saw her parents do together.

Kate’s surgery is a success and they are able to retrieve a total of 8 eggs! But while under anesthesia, Kate faces her younger selves along with Jack. She spends the day with them and the teenage Kate tries to instill doubt into her decision to be a mother. But ultimately, Kate decides that this is what she wants and manages to wake up from the anesthesia following the surgery.

Next week, we head back in time to Vietnam to learn more about Jack’s time there and what ultimately shaped him into the man we eventually saw him become. Is anyone else as excited as I am?

Score: 8.5/10
