A new villain is in town and things are about to take a dark, twisted turn. This week’s episode of The Flash was intriguing enough to keep fans engaged in the story that was unfolding. We’re only two episodes into the fifth season but it’s safe to say that Nora is a welcome addition to the group.

Last week’s episode ended with a first look at this season’s villain–Cicada. If you don’t read the comics then you won’t know much about him just yet, and for the sake of not ruining it for anyone, we’ll just leave it there.

Nora finally reveals as to why she came back in time and it all has to do with the fact that Barry goes missing in the future. But Team Flash isn’t really distressed over what future headlines say considering they’ve managed to manipulate it in the past.

Cecile faces a new challenge this week when she realizes her powers are diminishing and she can’t hear their baby’s thoughts anymore. She’s worried about connecting with the baby because all throughout her pregnancy and following the birth, she’s know everything the baby has wanted, but with that ability going away, she finds herself backed into a corner. After finding the mind-reading device that Harry left her with, she tells Joe she wants to use it on their baby, but he tells her she has to follow her instincts, and not rely on a device.

Cisco faces the reality of a life without Gypsy and spends most of the episode in mourning. He’s unable to vibe as a result which presents a problem when they need him to look into Caitlin’s father’s death certificate. Ralph and Caitlin decide to put the task at hand on the backburner and help Cisco get through the breakup through a series of steps that include getting a makeover.

Apart from Cicada, we see another metahuman villain that has the ability to put a force field around her target and then crush it. To solve the case, Nora decides to volunteer and help Barry out but she appears to be a bit too ambitious. We have to remember she never really knew Barry before he disappeared and this is her chance to impress him.

But this is an epic fail because she’s in way over her head and Barry insists that she needs to learn to hone her skills. After speaking with Joe and getting some advice, he realizes he needs to show Nora that he too struggled when he first got his powers, and it took time before he got to where he is.

While trying to investigate how Gridlock died, Iris comes across footage in which she hears Cicada’s heavy breathing in the background. This moment is useful later in the episode when they are actually faced with Cicada and Iris recognizes his breathing.

After a series of attempts to uplift Cisco’s spirits, they don’t exactly succeed but he starts to grasp the situation for what it is and tries to help Caitlin learn about whether or not her father is still alive. When he vibes with her, he can only do it for a matter of seconds but it was enough for her to see a death certificate being signed and her mother standing nearby.

Since they still don’t have a satellite or a means to use facial recognition, Nora, Barry, and Iris work together to figure out how to locate Vanessa based on her powers. When Nora and Barry show up, it is Nora who saves the day when Barry gets trapped inside of the force field. As they are taking Vanessa away in cuffs, Cicada shows up and sticks a dagger through her.

While Nora takes Vanessa to a hospital, Ralph, Cisco, and Barry lose their powers after Cicada throws a dagger near them. It is at this moment that Iris recognizes Cicada’s breathing in the background and realizes it’s the same person that killed Gridlock.

We’re not sure what is about to go down but it seems Nora knows exactly who Cicada is.

Score: 7/10
