The Good Doctor Season 2 Episode 5: Carrots Review

Synopsis: When a patient suffering from anorexia can’t gain the necessary weight needed to survive heart surgery, Claire suggests they perform an experimental surgery which Melendez strongly opposes. Shaun worries Glassman’s refusal to walk the hospital floor will keep him from being discharged and tries to persuade him to ambulate. Meanwhile, Shaun and Lea change the terms of their current relationship. (IMDB)

This was a better episode with cases sharing similar themes, offering plenty of drama and an unexpected ending for one of the doctors.

This episode started with Murphy and Lea in their new apartment where Lea established boundaries as far as their relationship was concerned. She would much rather be his friend than his girlfriend. Lea didn’t want to put her friendship with Murphy at risk and he seemed okay with this arrangement, for now.

Murphy, Park, and Lim were looking for a case to work on until Murphy noticed some fizzy urine. Their patient was a marathon runner and a former gastric bypass surgery recipient. He was suffering from crohn’s disease and in order to treat him, they would have to reverse his gastric bypass surgery. The issue with this was his husband who didn’t know that he had initially undergone the gastric bypass surgery in the first place. There was plenty of debate amongst the doctors about this. However, Murphy may have found a solution.

Murphy was still concerned about Glassman. He then hounded Dr. Blaize who was a little more patient than he was. Looking to motivate Glassman, Murphy was looking for a reward for him but it didn’t work for either of them. Meanwhile, when pressed by his patient’s husband, Park revealed a little more than he should have. The secret being revealed wasn’t that devastating. This led to their patient wanting to be transferred to another hospital. Despite this, Murphy found complications that required immediate surgery. The surgery was successful but the husband’s true colors came out.

Browne, Reznick, and Melendez were tending to an anorexic woman with a failing heart. Her anorexia complicated the surgery she would need to survive. In order to get over it, the doctors would need to get to the root of her condition. It was also causing a strain on her family. She even pulled out her own feeding tube because of her feelings. Browne suggested a surgical option for the anorexia but it was an unproven operation that was still not approved in the United States. The patient was still interested in the surgery thanks to Browne, who went around Melendez. She spoke passionately during a presentation to get the experimental surgery approved by the hospital which it ultimately was. The surgery itself appeared successful but the potential side effect of personality changes appeared when a hug from her son didn’t feel the same to her. Melendez didn’t like that Browne went around him so he booted her from his surgeries.

Lea got Murphy’s deposit back because she still didn’t thing that they should live together but Murphy thought otherwise as this was exactly what they wanted. Lea eventually came around. Meanwhile, Murphy was frustrated with Glassman’s progress but Blaize assured him that he just needed a supportive friend so he found Debbie who got him to walk. Park talked with someone on the phone.

Murphy and Lea celebrated that they would be roommates.

Overall, this was a better episode with a pair of compelling cases with the usual debate on one side and a more complex one on the other all while Murphy and Lea were solving their living and relationship arrangements and Murphy trying to help Glassman. The episode found a nice balance between all of these elements as well as focusing on the most deserving case. With the two teams led by Lim and Melendez, Browne’s punishment doesn’t seem so bad. Hopefully, Murphy and Lea’s arrangements don’t end up the same way the did last season. Either way, the season is back on the right path and it will be interesting to see what happens.
