The Great Catch-Up Post of 2018 (Part 1)

Keith NoakesNovember 24, 2018n/a7 min

So far in 2018, the site’s many writers and I have reviewed quite a few films. Due to the amount of films in any given year, I don’t always have the chance to see them right away. I hope to rectify this with this series of catch-up posts (since one post is far too long) that will look back on some of the films I’ve missed this year in the form of quick reviews. Follow along to track my progress as we approach the end of 2018.

The Girl in the Spider’s Web (original review)

Being vaguely familiar with the character of Lisbeth Salander and the series, this film didn’t really fit but was still a surprisingly entertaining thriller in its own right. Though the story was a little convoluted including a shallow family subplot, the story was kind of contrived, and Foy’s accent was a little off, it still had enough to warrant a recommendation.

Score: 7.5/10

Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms (original review)

A sugary, colorful preview of the newest inevitable Disney merchandise and parks and nothing more.

Score: 4.5/10

Overlord (original review)

An original war horror hybrid with slight pacing problems. It started off excitingly but couldn’t quite sustain it for the entirety of the film. Starting off in WWII before tapering off in the middle, it comes back strong by the end. However, it was a little too late as the slow period in the middle hurt the film’s momentum once its conclusion came. Though it was thrilling, it wasn’t as satisfying as it could have been. The last third was much more interesting so it could have gone much further with those elements. While not a bad film by any means, something more like the first and last thirds would have been better.

Score: 7.5/10

The Commuter (original review)

VVS_TheCommuter_Theatrical_Poster

It’s a fun and stupid action film that still manages to be entertaining despite its stupidness. The story was ridiculous and lags in the middle and the special effects were bad but Liam Neeson still shines in a film you would be proud to put on as an evening unwind or whenever there’s nothing else to watch.

Score: 7/10

I Feel Pretty (original review)

91409-IFeelPretty_One_Sheet_27x39_E1

More like I Feel Superficial. The film’s message was that confidence equals success but it does so in a mean-spirited way by making the character of Renee the butt of the joke and not going nearly deep enough with the lesson it’s trying to teach. The film was unfunny, the resolution was predictable, and it was just painful to watch across the board with Amy Schumer’s performance as Renee being the worst. Sure, Michelle Williams had a funny voice but that was about it.

Score: 4/10

Stay tuned for even more parts with more reviews as I try to catch up with the rest of what 2018 had to offer. Can I do it?

Overlord is on my watchlist; WWII-set zombie films are always fun. Looking forward to more of your 2018 reviews! 🙂
