Best and Worst Films of 2018

Keith NoakesDecember 31, 2018n/a9 min

We’ve reached that time of year once again where sites post their top 10 lists for the best and worst films of 2018. Here are my personal picks for the top 10 best and worst films of 2018 (along with some honorable/dishonorable mentions). Stay tuned for more picks from our other writers.

Best Films of 2018

If there was one thing you can say about my list was that I liked a lot of documentaries this year. Another thing you may notice is the omission of such marquee films as Roma, The Favourite, Shoplifters, Black Panther, Vice, or even A Star is Born, Green Book, or Can You Ever Forgive Me?. I wasn’t as big on the first five as much as others have while the others were a few spots away from making my top 10. If Beale Street Could Talk was a special one since I did not think of it very highly after seeing it at TIFF but since then, it has climbed up the ranks for me, just making my top 10. Ultimately, this list still has a nice variety to it though, ending with the highly polarizing, The House that Jack Built.

Honorable Mentions: First Reformed, Tully

10. If Beale Street Could Talk

9. Fahrenheit 11/9

8. Ralph Breaks The Internet

7. Searching

6. The Old Man and the Gun

Worst Films of 2018

Just like my best films list, my worst films list also has a nice variety to it. Just like good films, bad films can come any time of the year like the recent Christmas release Holmes and Watson which found its way to the top of my list (coincidentally not the only Sherlock Holmes movie on my list). One of my tweets about it also ended up on ABC World News Tonight. While some films on the list are bonafide stinkers such as The 15:17 to Paris and Show Dogs, others have fared better with viewers such as The Mule and Instant Family (Mark Wahlberg shows up again with Mile 22). The final film in the Fifty Shades series, Fifty Shades Freed didn’t make the list nor the mindless Rampage. The top 3 are pretty much locked in and the rest of the list is interchangeable.

Dishonorable Mentions: Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare, Nobody’s Fool

10. Sherlock Gnomes
