Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 6 Episode 5: A Tale of Two Bandits Review

So many Judys.

The cold open was of Terry believing that Doug Judy, The Pontiac Bandit, may have returned after a series of suspicious looking car thefts but unfortunately it was not Judy as he was dead.

Terry and Jake attended Judy’s funeral where Jake encountered all the unflattering things that Judy said about him to his family and he had to do some unflattering things as well. As far as they knew, Judy was a great guy who saved Jake’s life. Funny enough, Judy wasn’t dead after all. Judy claimed to have laid low after having a hit put on him for stealing someone’s Ferrari but he was adamant that he was innocent. We’ve heard this before and Terry wasn’t buying it and he was right as Judy was simply stringing them along to distract them while his sister Trudy (more wordplay) was the one stealing the cars.

In reality, Judy was stealing cars to help pay for medical school and she claimed that she would stop until she paid it off. In the course of stealing cars was when Doug had a hit put on him. Their plan was to catch the mob boss who put a hit on Doug in exchange for a reduced sentence for Trudy. They did not get off to the best start and things got worse when the Ferrari blew up. They may have caught their guy but Trudy Judy escaped. In fact, she had everyone played.

Meanwhile, the rest of the gang were faced with the prospect of losing their bar once it became overrun with firefighters. Holt wasn’t as concerned about it. The logical solution to their problem was to challenge the firefighters to a drink-off. The numbers game set in and things were looking bleak until Holt would come back to help after regretting having turned his back on the others. Ultimately, his expensive taste would save the day.

In order for Jake and Rosa to trust each other, they would do 1,000 push ups if one of them was wrong. To up the ante, Jake and Terry increased that to 100,000. Since Terry, was wrong about Doug Judy, he would have to do 100,000 push ups but for him, it wasn’t much of a punishment.

Overall, A Tale of Two Bandits was a good episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine that brought back Doug Judy once again for a new adventure that would end in an unexpected way. The chemistry between Craig Robinson and Andy Samberg was still on point here, making Doug and Jake fun to watch and it’s not quite the end yet with them. The other subplot was fun as well with Drunk Amy being the highlight. Holt coming back to save the day was satisfying. Ultimately, the balance between both subplots could have been a little better.
