It’s just getting worse. The pieces are there but they are just so far apart that it is hard to watch.

This episode started with a glimpse of a young Tamar Hodel witnessing some general shadiness from her father and Fauna’s grandfather George. It’s something we kind of already knew about him but the series has yet to really explore that side of him so suffice it to say that this did not happen here either.

Back in 1965, Hodel still had the weird man on her tail while Singletary found himself in trouble with the LAPD and detective Billis (Yul Vazquez) once again. They had nothing on him but they roughed him up anyway. Singletary only saw this as progress as he believed he was getting closer to the truth. Meanwhile, his PTSD from his time in Korea for some reason resurfaced.

Hodel believed that Corinna may be hiding Tamar somewhere in her house. So the next logical step was for her to break in to that house while Corinna was away. She would find evidence that suggested someone being held in the house but she was interrupted by the weird man who had followed her into the house.

Singletary was watching Hodel the whole time from outside and later tried to approach her but only scared her off. Faced with the choice of Singletary and the weird man, she chose the former. He started to ask her questions, however, she was apprehensive and skeptical of his motives. He knew some information about her mother so she started asking him questions about her. Before revealing that Tamar Hodel was alive, Fauna snuck away from Singletary. His frustration for some reason made him want to reenlist into the army though he was too old.

The weird man appeared to be some sort of murder and shared his latest work with George Hodel but he wasn’t impressed which only frustrated the weird man. His only job was to keep watch of Fauna. While she was away, a boy who had approached her at a party before and tried to call her here was found murdered (presumably by the weird man). This was the last straw for her and she wanted to leave. Before staying with a friend, she called Jimmy Lee who told her that she was on her way to Los Angeles to come get her.

After buying a crime newspaper about The Black Dahlia, Singletary had a breakthrough as George Hodel seemed to look into a room that had a horse in it for whatever reason.

Overall, Dark Flower was another mediocre episode of I Am The Night with the dull and convoluted plot full of mediocre writing we’ve come to expect from the series. Although it somewhat brought Singletary and Fauna Hodel together, it’s just hard to care about either of them at this point despite the decent performances. Unfortunately, the chances that the series will somehow fix itself are becoming slimmer and slimmer with every new episode.

Score: 5/10
