How adorable is baby Jack? Watching Kate embrace the role of a mother is something we never knew we wanted. It’s adorable, sweet, endearing, and resonates with all of us, regardless of the fact if we’re mothers or not. It’s been just a couple days when we catch up with Kate and Toby again in the neonatal ICU. As the new parents are trying to acclimate to baby Jack being there, Beth and Randall are preparing to head back home, because duty calls.

This week is particularly tough for Beth and Randall, and after watching how the episode ends, it will be hard to get ready for what comes next. After returning home from California, Randall and Beth have to figure out a schedule that works around Beth’s dance classes and Randall’s councilman schedule. Let’s just say that it’s not ideal, but they’re trying to make it work. Well, Randall is trying to make it work, and he should be after asking Beth to reconsider doing the classes. However, you can’t help but feel bad for him because he really put forth a lot of effort between handling work, coming home to be with the girls while Beth is gone, and then doing it all over again the next day.

Things take a dramatic turn when Randall asks Beth to be there for an important dinner and she shows up super late. He assumes it’s because she went off to her other plans, but in reality, she was stuck in traffic and her phone died. This is a tad bit awkward considering he left a very long, very aggressive voicemail for her, which culminates in a huge argument that we don’t get to see.

While Randall and Beth are trying to make sense of their relationship, Toby is trying to come to terms with baby Jack. He’s having a hard time connecting in the way Kate has and doesn’t know how to respond in a non-frantic way. Of course, this leaves Kate to handle things on her own until Toby comes around and realizes it will all be okay. Seeing them as parents warms my heart. How about that scene when they’re both holding the baby, SIGH!

In the past, the Big Three is getting ready for their first school dance, and it turns out it’ll be Jack’s first time going to one too! Rebecca and Jack are chaperones for the dance and while Kevin is embarrassed by it, Randall is too occupied with a science exam to even worry about the big night or pay attention to his date. Also, watching Rebecca put together Kate’s dance outfit is the cutest thing ever!

While at the dance, Kevin and Sophie have their first kiss, and Rebecca and Jack sneak away to make out in the library only to find Randall studying in secret there. After convincing him to go, the night goes on and it turns out to be quite the amazing one.

In the present, Zoe and Kevin start going to couples therapy after Kevin’s relapse. It seems like a long road ahead, but it gets even more complicated when Zoe realizes Kevin wants to have kids–and she does not. It’s a bit jarring to see this conversation take place because it feels like it may be the end of the road for them, and then when Kevin starts lurking around Sophie’s apartment, the story is surely going to shift gears really fast. However, Sophie is now engaged and has moved on, and with the love of his life now promised to another, Kevin returns home to tell Zoe he only wants her–even if it’s without children. This won’t play out very well in the future.

The Pearsons are all over the place at this point in the season, and while some are celebrating, most of them are downright miserable. It only highlights what Rebecca says earlier in the episode about whether or not their kids will find happiness. We’re not sure about the future, but right now, things are looking pretty grim.

Score: 9/10
