“Baby Boom”starts off with Andy and Maya breaking down a wall to rescue a little girl caught in a fire. Ryan thanks them which leads to Maya asking if he will be stopping by that evening. She makes it an excuse to talk about booty calls and catching feelings which they both say can be kept separate. At the gym, Dean is visibly distressed about having to deal with his parents and Ben is scared to ask Sullivan to sign off on Medic One. Sullivan enters and sees Ben is a bit distracted and suggests they spar to release some tension.

Travis teases Victoria about Ripley and before she can tell him about Ripley’s conversation he thanks her for opening up. They become distracted when they find an abandoned baby at the station. This causes an awkward conversation about kids with Chief Ripley before both of them leave Victoria alone with the baby. Maya tries to bring up her situation with Jack  to Andy when they get distracted by the baby. They both rush off, but Maya bumps into Jack. She tells him that it was a one-time thing and she plans to tell Andy, but he tells her not to worry about it.

With everyone avoiding the baby in the mess hall, Pruitt arrives with a box of Andy’s old stuff. Victoria arrives and hands the baby to Pruitt while the crew goes through Andy’s box of memories. They become distracted by a loud crash downstairs where an RC has crashed into the garage door. Each of the crew members start to assess the situation with Andy heading to the check on the driver. She approaches when a young girl Ellie (Kyla-Drew) comes out apologizing for the situation.

Ellie crashed the RV when she saw her mom having a seizure. The team races inside to tend to her mom while trying to cut the side off the RV door. With an ambulance unable to come for thirty minutes, they have to stabilize her for the time being. Ben manages to inject drugs into the seizing patient giving them enough time to move her to the ambulance. Travis and Ripley stabilize the building’s infrastructure, but through conversation he reveals that Victoria told Travis about their relationship.

As the EMTs try to take care of her, the woman seizes again and the needle dislodges from her neck causing her to bleed. The EMTs won’t take her in this unstable state so they have to do something. The woman involuntarily hits Victoria causing Bishop to tell her to sit out. She runs into Priutt who gifts her with the baby and she passes it along to Travis. Ellie starts to panic about the situation so Andy takes her to a quiet room to calm down.

With no option others, Ben decides to use the Bone Gun. They are going to shoot some drugs straight into her bone marrow for some serious sedation and pain. With the drugs in her system, the woman is stable and they cart her out to the ambulance. Andy comes back to Ellie to bring her to the hospital, but she locked herself in and refuses to leave. Unfortunately, things get worse when Ellie collapses.

Andy and Victoria manage to break the glass and get access to the room to tend to Ellie. They notice her diabetic pump hasn’t changed meaning she is either running on low blood sugar or has a head injury. Through a test they discover it is low blood sugar and administer some insulin to help Ellie regain consciousness. Victoria runs into Ripley and updates him on the situation. He is unhappy with her updating everyone, mentions he knows about Travis and feels distant from her.

Ben and Sullivan are on diaper duty and discuss kids and family. Ben uses the opportunity to talk about the importance of family. When the baby wets itself again, Ben has to leave the baby with Sullivan. Ellie seems unconfident in herself prompting Andy to read her past Andy’s letter to show how one overcomes their own fears. Victoria confronts Travis about the conversation he had with Ripley while he dismantles the RV. Unfortunately, a piece nicks the gas line and causes a massive explosion that engulfs the entire station. Luckily, they manage to contain the fire pretty quickly.

Maya is forced to take care of the baby in the locker room. She takes a call from Jack who says he doesn’t want to keep things quiet. He wants to make things work with her. While Maya hangs up the phone in frustration, she talks to the baby and realizes she wants this. She decides it is time to tell Andy.

Victoria tries to explain to Ripley that Travis is a big part of her life and therefore he was bound to find out. When she lets slip that Jack knows too, Ripley seems frustrated that their relationship is coming out. He feels like he is breaking policy and sees everyone as subordinates. Victoria takes that to heart and ends the conversation as boss to subordinate.

Ben patches up Sullivan after some minor injuries from the blast. Sullivan decides this is time to ask Ben what is going on. He brings up Medic One and his debate on applying. Sullivan urges Ben’s importance to Station 19, but knows he is capable enough to succeed. Ben has his full support.

Meanwhile, Dean is forced to have his family dinner party and makes Jack join in on the family fun. He introduces Jack to his sister Yemi (Birgundi Baker), father Bill (Jeffrey D. Sams) and mother Ifeya (Barbara Eve Harris). His mother critiques Dean’s living situation, and tries to comment on any crack in his armour that she can find. At dinner, Dean’s parents discuss how they met and turn the conversation onto Dean’s lack of his own family.

Jack decides to interject, but Ifeya says that Dean has much more opportunities than Jack could ever get. Yemi decides this is the perfect time to drop the bomb that she is moving out. They criticize her for being a child still and Dean has had enough. He talks back about their disregard for other people’s feelings and that causes Ifeya to want a chat alone with her son. Dean tells his mother that his station is like his family and that he finds the work he does important. He manages to convince his mom to give Yemi financial support in exchange for some dates that she gets to set up.

At the lobby, someone finally comes by to pick up the baby and the crew says their goodbyes. Not before Maya gives the baby a teddy bear showing her soft side to the crew. That evening, Victoria, Travis, Andy and Maya head out for drinks. Maya pulls her aside to finally tell her about Jack with Andy realizing she has always wanted to be with Ryan. However, they are interrupted when Ryan shows up with his new “friend”Jenna (Sarah Oh).

Captain’s Log

  • Will Pruitt officially retire?
  • How will Dean’s dates go?
  • Will Andy confront Ryan?
  • Are Ripley and Victoria over?
  • Will Maya and Jack start dating?
  • Will Ben join Medic One or stick with Station 19?

Overall, Baby Boom was a good episode. It centres on the importance of family and how sometimes we get to choose who we consider part of that inner circle. Each of the characters deal with their own issues regarding family and how it affects their job. It may be dangerous being a firefighter, but it’s even more risky being the family member of one. Hopefully, some of them realize that sooner rather than later before they risk ruining the support groups around them.

Score: 7.5/10
