We Are The Radical Monarchs is a touching, and powerful reminder of the power and strength that children can have on change.

This will be one of many reviews during this year’s Toronto Inside Out Film Festival, to keep up with our latest coverage, click here.

We Are The Radical Monarchs is a very interesting documentary that follows a group of Oakland girls as they learn about social justice issues, equity, and discrimination. Just knowing that much about it is good – going into it completely blind will have you in awe. The best part of the film are the things these girls are trying to achieve and the journey they go through.

The biggest issue with making a documentary about children, though, is that it is sometimes easy to lose focus. It’s harder to organize the thoughts and processes of kids in a coherent fashion within a documentary, versus focusing on older subjects. The only real negative about the film is how it arguably may be too unstructured and unfocused where a more coherent message could have been constructed from these young girls’ important work, which would have helped to elevate the film as a result.

At the end of the day, please do see We Are the Radical Monarchs. The subject matter of this documentary is something that viewers will learn plenty about over the course of the film, and it’s really fun to follow this group of girls through their very personal, and very interesting journey.
