TIFF 2019
September 5-15

This morning, TIFF unveiled their first wave of films for their festival taking place on September 5th to 15th. Some incredibly notable and anticipated films are among the lineup such as DC Comics’ Joker, Rian Johnson’s Knives Out, Taika Waititi’s Jojo Rabbit, The Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems and more.

Essentially, this wave of announcements consists of all the big flashy premieres that will be happening in Toronto come September. For the Special Presentations (films with blue color coding), expect a few members of the cast and possibly the director to attend the first screening of the film. For Galas (films color-coded pink), expect the entire billed cast to show up, as well as the director and producers. For instance, since Joker is a gala, I assume Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, and Todd Phillips to all be in attendance.

Some other films that have appeared to come out of nowhere are Noah Baumbauch’s Marriage Story (that wasn’t even reported to be finished yet), starring Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson. Another film that was speculated but still a surprise is Edward Norton’s return to the directing chair Motherless Brooklyn. In the film, Norton plays a private detective with Tourettes syndrome, also starring Bruce Willis, Willem Dafoe, Alec Baldwin and more. Other films that are on my radar because of the star power attached are Destin Daniel Cretton (director of Short Term 12 and the newly announced Shang Chi)’s Just Mercy, which will star Michael B. Jordan, Brie Larson, and Jamie Foxx. As well, Beanie Feldstein starring How to Build a Girl, Sundance hit Honey Boy, and Cannes hits The Lighthouse and Parasite.

Rian Johnson, who has played two of his previous films at the festival will be bringing his star-studded latest Knives Out to the fest (which he actually sold the script for at the festival last year).

Not only am I wildly overwhelmed by the lineup, but there’s only more to come due to the other programmes yet to be announced (Midnight Madness, Platform, Masters). You can view the full lineup here.
