More Nazi leaders than expected; the first trailer for Jojo Rabbit.
It’s hard to imagine what a movie written and directed by Taika Waititi would look like when the cast list also includes the Thor: Ragnarok filmmaker playing Adolf Hitler.
But here we are. Jojo Rabbit is now an Official Selection for the Special Presentations section of this year’s Toronto Film Festival. A fairly small budget film compared to his last directorial job with the MCU, the movie’s first look has just been presented in a trailer that labels the project as an anti-hate satire.
The trailer doesn’t feature too much of Waititi’s Nazi party leader – but what it does show gives you a good sense of what’s to come with Jojo Rabbit. Much less an outlying of the movie’s plot points and more of a collection of odd imagery that looks like a Taika classic in the making, this trailer certainly does the job of engaging audiences with what on the surface is a really strange concept for a movie.
The fantastical and not at all realistic story of Jojo Rabbit follows Jojo, a young boy who’s part of Hitler’s army during World War II that finds out his mother – played by Scarlett Johansson – is hiding a young Jewish girl in their home. Jojo is accompanied throughout the movie by his imaginary friend who happens to be Adolph Hitler with an accent that sounds remarkably less Austrian and decidedly more kiwi.
There’s not much to see in the trailer of the wider cast which is strange considering it features an impressive roll call including the aforementioned Johansson alongside Rebel Wilson, Stephen Merchant, Alfie Allen and Sam Rockwell.
The thing that I love most about Taika’s movies are his characters and the dialogue between them and this trailer makes it obvious that we’re not going to be let down by Jojo Rabbit. Because quite frankly, if the majority of this movie is the main character and his imaginary friend I’ll certainly be watching it several times over.
