This week’s episode of Batwoman, entitled Who Are You?, is a step up from what we’ve been privy to since the series began. Things have been extremely slow to develop, and getting Kate Kane into the Batwoman costume has been a trek. The buildup to it just hasn’t been exciting which is why it should have happened already.

This week’s villain, Magpie, is responsible for a series of robberies and it seems amidst it all Batwoman is nowhere to be found. And that’s because Miss Kate Kane has found someone to spend all her time with, and they are pretty darn adorable. Cuddling in bed with her, Kate has been rather absent on the superhero front.

Hiding her secret identity as Batwoman has been proving rather difficult, and keeping secrets is just not Kate’s thing. But as we’ve come to know with superheroes, she has to keep the secret close to her chest. It involves the safety of everyone she loves, and it’s a risk she’s not willing to take.

Naturally, this puts a strain on her new relationship with Reagan. I feel like she could have come up with better excuses than the ones she did, but hey, that’s just me.

Things with Alice are still complicated as ever, especially with Catherine being extremely shady. Basically, it turns out that Catherine was involved in covering up the fact that Bet didn’t actually die all those years ago. She lied about the bone fragments and now Alice is trying to blackmail her. But before Alice can do it herself, Catherine comes clean to Jacob about everything.

If you recall, Kate/Batwoman has Alice’s boyfriend all tied up, but she’s still concerned for his well-being. Hence, why she has Mary take care of him and tend to his medical needs. But while on a high, Mary manages to get some information out of the guy that could prove to be useful in finding out Alice’s plan.

Meanwhile, Batwoman is forced to deal with Magpie’s robberies which involve stealing Martha Wayne’s infamous pearl necklace. Mind you, this necklace was meant to be a part of a big exhibition until she stole it. Luke and Batwoman track Magpie down and eventually locate where she has been hiding all the stolen goods.

But because of the room being temperature-controlled, she had to be rather careful while walking through the room. And the only thing she gets out of it before it blows up is data off of a hard drive that shows Magpie made a 3-D copy of Martha’s necklace and made it explosive.

Luckily, Batwoman/Kate saves the day back at the exhibition but it comes at the cost of ditching Reagan once again. Love and vigilantism just don’t go together!

While playing the role of Batwoman, Kate is hoping to focus some of her energy on other efforts, like opening a real estate firm. She wants to get rundown properties and turn them around and offer them to the people of Gotham that have no place to live. It’s a very ambitious idea that I personally hope we see come to fruition during the season.

Batwoman is getting to a better place slowly yet surely, and hopefully we will get to see more of her story develop. There’s a lot of potential there and it’d be a shame if went untapped and unexplored, so here’s to hoping they explore more of it!
