Synopsis: Annalise’s disappearance leads to panic and paranoia as Michaela and Connor consider taking a deal in their cases. All the while anxious, everyone mourns Asher’s death as Gabriel holds on to key details about his murder. (IMDb)
When it seemed like Asher’s killer would be revealed in the last episode, this new episode of How to Get Away With Murder gives us that reveal and what may seem like a big twist wasn’t really one in the grand scheme of things. We are gearing up towards an endgame but suffice it to say that the series has at least one more curveball to throw at us before it’s all over.
The Reckoning began with Annalise having a bad dream involving prison and a crying baby before waking up in her own bed where Ophelia was. She was taking care of her mother while under house arrest (via a flashback where she was charged with passport forgery though there would be a lot more coming). Annalise wanted to file a motion with the court to have the other charges against her revealed (Tegan was helping and helped her win). Ophelia did her best to help though with her dementia, she could only go so far. Meanwhile, Connor, Oliver, and Michaela mourned Asher while trying to move on. They knew about Annalise’s motion which would result in her knowing that they made a deal to testify against her which would have been obvious anyway.
Annalise met up with Bonnie and Frank who were still on her side (though Bonnie thought the two should have a plan for themselves). Chloe confronted Gabriel about Asher (he contacted her with Gabriel’s phone) which prompted a flashback hinted to in the last episode. Asher told her his situation and wanted her to pick him up. In the meantime, he started to record a video (which would clearly appear later). He was killed by the person who supposedly was going to pick him up all while Gabriel sort of watched from the bottom of his doorway. In the present, Gabriel brought said phone to the FBI (he was understandably hesitant after they framed him previously). Meanwhile, Ophelia disappeared while Annalise and Tegan were in court (she was with Nate who told her there was more to the story between he and Annalise).
Annalise surprisingly wanted a meeting with Connor, Oliver, and Michaela. All she was doing was save them from their own mistakes and she was not going to turn on them because she would look like a fool. Annalise knew they already turned on her. The night she left, she came back for Bonnie who had gone to her appartment to tell her about Asher. Meanwhile, Tegan learned of an unusual charge against Annalise, arson for burning down her childhood home (she did not have the best childhood leading her to be the parent she never got to others who may not have deserved it). The FBI got a tip from Nate’s Denver files which he had made a copy of before giving them to Annalise.
Connor, Oliver, and Michaela then went to Asher’s room. Gabriel heard them and came over. They accused him of doing something to Asher which prompted him to remember more of what happened that night. He saw a woman walk away from Asher’s body for whom he believed to be Laurel. Someone watched Asher get hit with the fireplace poker the first time so they picked it up to later finish the job. Connor, Oliver, and Michaela later got an email from the FBI containing Asher’s earlier video where he basically explained himself and tried to apologize.
Now we finally got to see what happened to Asher. The person picking him up and who killed him was the same woman Xavier Castillo sent to spy on Annalise. When Gabriel was at the FBI, agent Lanford called in the agent working Asher’s case. IT WAS THE SAME WOMAN. The episode ended with Gabriel telling the others.
Of course Xavier Castillo was behind this. Only one question remains, who will win?
