Killing Eve (3×01) Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey Review

Another series that I caught on to late, Killing Eve was certainly a nice surprise, starring Sandra Oh (who happens to be from my hometown) and the revelation that is Jodie Comer.

Synopsis: After Eve is shot by Villanelle, she’s trying to move on. Villanelle is also moving on, until she is approached by someone from her past. Carolyn is being undermined at work and Kenny is looking for more information about the twelve. (IMDB)

Season three of Killing Eve started slowly but would end with a thud though some may be saddened by how we got there (you know I was). We’ve had Eve vs. Villanelle in a sort of frenemy battle for two seasons and now this seasons appears to be moving away from that which looks to be a good thing though they surely won’t be too far away from one another for much longer. The premiere sees our two leads in similar stages in their current lives which got to show off the acting chops of Oh and Comer.

Slowly Slowly Catchy Monkey began with a flashback to 1974 Moscow where a female gymnast being berated by her trainer as another male gymnast watched on the sidelines. Later in the locker room, the two would reunite, ending in a way that he probably did not anticipate which was her killing him and pouring some white powder over him. Meanwhile in the present, Villanelle attended a wedding in Spain (she hasn’t changed) which quickly devolved once she noticed a woman from her past who she attacked before they were both driven away. Back in London, Carolyn was annoyed by the fact that someone was being assigned to oversee her desk, a man named Paul who she found dreadful, while she also appeared to face some repercussions for her actions.

For those wondering what Eve has been up to, we see her dejected while in a Korean grocery store buying junk food. She found some semblance of solitude while working in the back at a restaurant (she could have made more money at the front but she preferred the back) while living in an appartment by herself. Meanwhile in Barcelona, Dasha (Harriet Walter), the woman Villanelle accosted earlier and also the girl from the flashback, worked for the twelve and offered her the opportunity to come back in exchange for luxuries she never had. However, Villanelle was skeptical but still intrigued by the offer. Dasha would be sent home to Russia if she were to come back. Villanelle wanted to be a keeper which was a position higher than her or Konstantin (who received plenty of texts while buying a gag gift presumably for Villanelle). He was being hounded for a report though he would find a message on a delivery menu (presumably from Villanelle) asking for a meeting.

Kenny left MI6 (and his mother) to work as a journalist for an online publication (and was actually happy). However, he was still looking into the past, specifically the money trail of the twelve, and was meeting a friend. While Eve was in a drunken stupor, she absentmindedly sent a text to Kenny who showed up at her appartment (he tracked her down). She was trying to move on (keep thing buried). They hadn’t seen each other in a long time. Eve was still in touch with Niko for whom they were in the process of separating. Kenny tried to tell Eve about what he found but she wasn’t interested. Meanwhile, Dasha, a famed assassin in her own right, offered Villanelle a job as a way back. She was tasked to kill a political activist and to do so, she posed as a delivery woman. Villanelle certainly did not show signs of rust (ending by covering her latest victim in powder).

Kenny was moving out from his mom’s house and made his intentions clear in an entertaining scene with Carolyn. He offered to go out for drinks with Eve since he thought she should be around people (which was fair). She eventually accepted though when she arrived at his office to meet him, he was gone. He was too busy falling from the roof of the building to his unfortunate death. The episode ended with Eve running to Kenny’s body.

It seems like the twelve are still lurking from the shadows and that will probably be enough to bring Eve back in. It’s a shame Kenny had to die. Things are getting serious.
