Synopsis: Annalise learns unexpected and shocking details about Sam’s past. Meanwhile, Connor and Michaela feel the pressure when the FBI learns there is new evidence in the case; and Frank and Bonnie’s history is explored, revealing what originally fractured their relationship. (IMDb)
The writers are definitely complicating this final stretch of How to Get Away With Murder as it feels like we are moving backwards instead of forwards. This all has to come together somehow but with only two episodes left, time is certainly running out but there is definitely not any reason for concern just yet. Meanwhile. this episode spends a lot of time in the past to add some much needed context to the happenings of the present while answering some much-maligned questions before ending with a surprising reveal.
The long-titled What If Sam Wasn’t the Bad Guy This Whole Time? began with Frank and Nate driving while discussing what just happened (Nate killing Xavier Castillo). This was all part of Nate’s plan in his attempt to take charge and take everybody down (and it seemed to be working). Meanwhile. Michaela and Connor were at the FBI who were not happy with them for telling Annalise that they were informing against her (though Annalise is not stupid). They claimed to have told her the truth so they can remain in her inner circle. Despite this, Lanford wanted to renegotiate new plea deals with the two of them (as opposed to them being charged with everything) which arguably meant lying. This would be a battle of wits with each taking much different approaches. While Michaela was led to believe that she and Connor ended with their same plea deals, Connor agreed to a new one (terms TBD).
The last episode ended with a reveal of something that may or may not have happened between Sam and Hannah. But first, we also got a glimpse of Sam and Vivian’s relationship as he wanted to be in Vivian and Gabriel’s lives. He allegedly still loved Vivian and wanted to leave Annalise though couldn’t after they had lost their baby (for which he was partly responsible for). She then claimed that Sam had an incestuous relationship with Hannah which Annalise adamantly rejected (but it sort of makes sense and the signs were there). Meanwhile, the trip to the past also explored the beginnings of Frank and Bonnie’s relationship. Hannah was a main force who helped Frank out of prison and Sam was uncomfortable with how close he was getting. He would maybe use this as an excuse to break Frank and Bonnie up back then as he was concerned about the latter and what she went through.
Annalise was coming to terms with the fact that Sam may be just as damaged as everyone else. The grief of losing their baby was what drove them apart and allegedly drove him to Hannah and back to Vivian. Nate presented evidence to Lanford about Pollock’s involvement with the Castillos, implying that Lanford may also be in on it. This was enough to convince Lanford. Meanwhile, Vivian wanted Gabriel to go back to Chicago with her. His journey was over and he needed to move on from the past. He may not have learned what he wanted but he learned more about himself and that was good enough.
After looking into Hannah’s past, there was evidence of her contacting the FBI and a prolonged absence in high school that may have implied that she was pregnant with Sam’s baby and that baby was Frank.
Hopefully this all comes circling back to the end. The next episode is titled “Annalise Keating Is Dead” so maybe Hannah comes back. She would definitely be high on the suspect list, assuming she actually dies. What is her connection to the Castillos. There are still plenty of questions left to answer but it’d be wrong to quit now.
