Synopsis: Annalise’s murder trial has arrived, but Tegan’s history complicates her role as counsel. While Nate visits Jorge Castillo in prison with a proposition, news breaks about Xavier. Bonnie works to help Annalise use Hannah Keating’s past as blackmail. (IMDb)
The end of How to Get Away With Murder was never going to be a simple one as Annalise’s rollercoaster trial began. It was a back and forth game but whoever was winning was too hard to tell as the case against her was crumbling in more ways than one thanks to a certain character’s return. Meanwhile, the title of the episode doesn’t mean what it sounds like though by the end, she may as well be dead.
Annalise Keating Is Dead began with Annalise getting ready for the first day of her trial. This episode also helped to give us plenty of insight into her psyche as we got to listen to her inner thoughts. She was convinced that Hannah was her way to win despite the risk. She would make sure that no one would learn her secret. Hannah later agreed, adding a financial penalty as part of a non-disclosure agreement if her secret was revealed to anyone else (including Frank) but she didn’t finish there. Meanwhile, Connor and Michaela were also getting ready for the trial (the contrast in confidence was obvious).
The trial would hit a snag immediately once Tegan’s past history was put into question thanks to Laurel who finally came back to testify about how Tegan helped her escape from her family (she was also set to testify against Annalise). As a result, she was no longer representing Annalise but we knew this moment would come eventually. Connor and Michaela were not thrilled about Laurel who just happened to get a better deal than they did. During the trial, Annalise grilled Michaela, who lied about the night that Sam died (Gabriel watched and was not happy) by saying that Annalise instructed Wes to kill him for her, on her ambition and played a tape of her calling ICE about deporting Simon Drake, Meanwhile, Nate visited Jorge Castillo in prison in the hopes of convincing him to testify for Annalise but mostly against Birkhead.
Laurel had regrets about how she and Frank left off as he was good for Christopher. He wanted her to do the right thing and not testify against Annalise but she wanted to do what was best for Christopher. Meanwhile as the trial continued, Frank shook Connor with the news that Michaela got a better deal than him. Faking another panic attack (the one in the interrogation room was also fake), he tried to leverage a better deal though it was all for naught. As Connor also lied about the night that Sam died, Annalise grilled him on the fact that his relationship with Oliver started on a lie. Despite this, she still did not feel confident and needed Hannah. Unfortunately, she would add another stipulation to the contract of if she testified and Annalise won, Annalise would need to publicly admit to having killed Sam (the death implied by the episode title). Even worse, she was considering signing the contract.
To stop Laurel from testifying, Frank and Annalise confronted her and appealed to her wanting to set an example for Christopher as he would eventually learn of all the bad things she did (she would be just like her father) if she were to testify. Mentioning what happened to Frank didn’t hurt. It worked as, wanting to do what was right, she refuted Connor and Michaela and admitted to be instructed to lie by Langford. Even despite this, Annalise was still considering the contract and actually signed it. Meanwhile, news that Michaela and Laurel had deals that did not include jail time as opposed to Connor’s seemingly continued to erode their already fractured relationship
Xavier’s body just happened to be found. This was all a ploy by Nate to set up Birkhead and to get Jorge Castillo to testify. However, the news would get worse as once Frank confronted Bonnie about his feelings for Laurel, she seemed to reveal that he was Sam and Hannah’s lovechild which would then imply that he may be responsible for Hannah’s apparent suicide.
So what will happen next. Birkhead surely had Hannah killed but the most interesting thing to look our for in next week’s series finale is how the relationship of the Keating 3 (now that Laurel is back) will survive and obviously whether or not Annalise will. Will there be justice? Considering this series, an unhappy ending would not be out of the question.
