Driveways is a familiar and meandering, yet beautifully acted and meditative exploration of an unlikely friendship.

Melancholy looms over the first few frames of Driveways, the second film from director Andrew Ahn (Spa Night).

However, Driveways swiftly transitions into an authentic, heartwarming and wholesome exploration of a unlikely friendship between a sensitive and shy 8-year-old boy named Cody (Jay) and a lonely Korean War vet named Del (Dennehy). Meanwhile, Cody’s protective and strong-minded single mother Kathy (Chau) is dealing with the loss of her estranged older sister that she regrets never having a fulfilling connection with. As the last remaining family members, Kathy and Cody decide to spend the summer at her late sister’s house to clean it up and prepare to put it on the market. As soon as they pull into the driveway (hence the title of the film), Cody almost immediately has an interaction with Del, who initially appears to be reserved and cold, much to the dismay of Kathy. However, it’s not long before Cody forms a bond with Del, helping to bring out the best in each other.

Exploring an unlikely friendship between two people at very different stages in their lives is far from a new concept and Driveways doesn’t attempt to break any new ground in that regard. It’s very loosely structured while following a relatively familiar formula. In addition, the film’s brisk 83 minute running time doesn’t allow for enough time to fully flesh out the characters and their relationships. However, its mundane and introspective nature, paired with a soothing soundtrack and stunning cinematography still put it a cut above many films in the same vein.

In the end, Driveways strongest assets are its beautifully understated lead performances. Chau in particular is a standout as Kathy. Chau began making a name for herself with her performance in the star-studded, but messy science-fiction drama Downsizing. Despite receiving acclaim for her performance and a Golden Globe nomination, this film serves as a great opportunity  where she is able to showcase her dramatic chops. Chau delivers a subtle, yet impactful performance that elevates the writing. Meanwhile, the late Dennehy as Del delivers one of his best performances in recent years, reciting a monologue that acts as the film’s emotional crux. Last but certainly not least, Jaye as Cody brings a certain wisdom to his performance that far beyond his years. He works very well with Dennehy, bringing a certain authenticity to their character interactions and running dialogue.

While the film surely would have benefited from an extra 20 minutes of running time to further flesh out the characters and their relationships, Driveways is a very well acted and charming exploration of an unlikely friendship.
