Classic Review: Knocked Up (2007)

Judd Apatow is undisputedly one of the biggest names in comedy. As a writer, producer, and/or director, he has been a part of countless classics, spawning plenty of careers in the process. With the release of his newest film, The King of Staten Island, this Friday on VOD, KLM will be highlighting some of his best films.

2007 was a great year for comedy thanks to such gems such as Superbad, Hot Rod, Juno, and The Simpsons Movie. However, one film that truly stood out from the rest was Knocked Up. The film follows a goal-less stoner named Ben Stone (Rogen) and a television personality named Allison Scott (Heigl) who after a one night stand leads to Scott essentially being knocked up and giving the film its name.

When it comes to Knocked Up. there are so many positives to be had. Firstly, the star studded cast is exceptional. The film marks one of Rogen career highs as he delivers a great performance alongside a goofball entourage of actors such as Jonah Hill (Jonah), Martin Starr (Martin), and Jason Segel (Jason). All of these literal “dudes” balance off one another so flawlessly, adding such great energy and making the film well worth the watch. Meanwhile, performances from Heigl and Paul Rudd as Pete were fine while not given the opportunity to necessarily stand out. One of the film’s biggest surprises was Mann’s exceptional performance as the sassy Debbie. Without a doubt, this is Mann’s best performance that she would get the chance to take to the next level in the followup film This is 40.

On the surface, it could seem that Knocked Up simply be the next low-brow Rogen stoner comedy. However, Apatow absolutely knocks it out of the park with his exceptional heartfelt screenplay. Rather than it being a story of a one night stand going wrong, it almost feels like a story of two polar opposites slowly developing a #goals relationship that just like real life, has its ups and downs creating an extremely authentic relationship piece. Instead of relying on pop culture tropes of the time, Apatow focuses solely on his characters, story development, and some truly funny humor that will stand the test of time.

At the end of the day, Knocked Up is definitely worth checking out sooner rather than later. It’s got the laughs, heart, and possibly even a few tear jerking moments all making this one a easy choice for any movie night.
