Synopsis: After blowing its cover and damaging the Zephyr in the process, the team must scramble to rescue Mack’s parents, save S.H.I.E.L.D. from a chronicom infestation and fix the ship; Daisy and Sousa are at a disadvantage against Nathaniel Malick. (IMDb)
While we are still in the 1970s, this new episode of Agents of SHIELD took last week’s cliffhanger and managed to top that this time around, giving us plenty of exciting twists and turns though in the end weren’t exactly unexpected. Meanwhile, another subplot simply fizzles out disappointingly.
Adapt or Die began on the Chromicon ship as Sibyl saw everything coming and it was now time to continue to adapt and seemingly move on to the next stage of their plan. Meanwhile, the Lighthouse appeared to be under control by the Chromicons unbeknownst to Stoner. As Mack and Yo-Yo set out to save Mack’s parents, the zephyr found itself under attack and shot down (taking a lot of damage). Simmons was unable to focus. Stoner still didn’t believe Coulson and May but May noticed something was wrong (thanks to her new power). implying that some of the agents may be Chromicons. Based on their observation of Coulson, they were adapting. Coulson also lit a fire under May who let some more emotion come out.
It certainly wasn’t easy for Mack to be with his parents. The crisis may have brought them together but there was still some distrust there. The Chromicons were bringing up hunters to take the place of SHIELD agents and Stoner was next until he was saved by Coulson and May. Coulson went down to the bottom of the Lighthouse and transported his mind to the Chromicon ship before having a philosophical conversation (playing with Coulson’s blurry status between human and robot) with Sibyl who was surprisingly forthcoming. Their planet was destroyed and they needed a place to go. Chromicons can’t die and they would simply outlive humans. Meanwhile, Deke walked in on Enoch drilling into the back of Simmons neck which of course gave him the wrong impression. There was no malice behind Enoch’s actions, he was merely working on an implant to manage her memory (hence the earlier unfocused state) so she could keep Fitz’s location secret as he would be in danger if found by the Chromicons. Simmons pleaded that this should be kept a secret. Coulson speeched as the two subplots played out with Mack’s father taking some damage during their escape and he planting some explosives.
May’s spidey sense continued as she noticed something wrong about Mack’s parents. He did not want to believe it but they were indeed Chromicons and attacked everyone aboard the quinjet before they were dispatched.
Daisy and Sousa woke up prisoners of Nathaniel Malick (Daisy had not control over her powers). The latter was fascinated with the two because of Daisy’s powers and Sousa apparent slow aging (he thought Sousa had powers). Nathaniel wasn’t aligned with Hydra but was interested in inhumans along with Daniel Whitehall. Daisy and Sousa bonded while Nathaniel harvested Daisy for her power but ultimately, he couldn’t handle it, leading to his apparent downfall.
The drama with Mack’s parents was a lot to take on so he needed some time so he drove off on a motorcycle. Unfortunately, the last scene saw Deke looking for him as the zephyr jumped without them.
Where did the others go? What will happen to Mack and Deke? The fun tidbits here and there are nice but the grand plan still isn’t there yet.
