Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.
While COVID rages on and there are still many areas where theatres have yet to open, the Box Office seems to be slowly returning to normal as we have finally gotten our first few major theatrical releases in over 5 months. Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated blockbuster Tenet opened this past weekend in Canada and internationally. It seems be doing exceptionally well overseas from a financial standpoint, as the film has already managed to accumulate over $53M worldwide. The film has made the majority of its profit in the U.K., France, South Korea and Germany. If this is any indication, the film will likely be a huge box office success once it opens in more markets Labor Day weekend. However, we will have to wait to see how the film does domestically as Warner Bros. have decided to hold off on releasing its Canadian box office statistics until the film opens in the U.S. on September 4th.
20th Century’s long delayed X-Men spinoff, The New Mutants finally hit theatres worldwide this past weekend. The film lead the pack domestically, as it accumulated over $7M from U.S. and Canadian theatres and nearly $10M in total worldwide. Considering the circumstances, the numerous delays and the fact that the film received scorchingly negative reviews from critics, $7M domestically is not half bad. However, it seems very unlikely that the film will be able to earn back its hefty $100M budget, even when considering it still has yet to open in many markets overseas.
The third instalment in Keanu Reeves successful 90s comedy franchise Bill & Ted Face the Music was released simultaneously on VOD and in theatres this past weekend. The film opened in just over 1000 theatres throughout Canada and the U.S., and has accumulated $1.1M, positioning it in third place at the box office. The film is also thriving on VOD platforms, as it is currently at #2 on the iTunes Charts, with its predecessors also positioned in the top 5.
Armando Iannucci’s latest film The Personal History of David Copperfield was finally released this past weekend after playing the festival circuit for almost a year. The film only earned $475K domestically, which is incredibly low considering the film opened in over 1,300 theatres throughout Canada and the U.S. However, it is thriving in Europe (especially in the U.K), as it has earned over $10M worldwide.
With the exception of Bill & Ted Face the Music, there were no other major new VOD releases this past weekend. However, Disney+ released their highly anticipated feature film adaptation based on the popular series, Phineas & Ferb The Movie: Candice Against the Universe. The film seems to have won over fans and is thriving financially.
