The Third Day Episode 2: The Son Review

Synopsis: Plagued by a disturbing dream, Sam awakes to find himself in a compromising situation and, having missed the morning crossing to return to the mainland, spends the day trying to learn more about the islanders’ beliefs. After a series of confusing and terrifying events leaves him shaken, Sam quickly plots a way off Osea with Jess, but is convinced to stay put as the islanders prepare for a dry run of their big event. (HBO)

It will be a shame to see Jude Law go.

At the end of last week’s episode, it became abundantly clear that Sam shared some sort of connection to Osea, the island that despite its appearances, never seemed quite right. As far as The Son was concerned, it mostly addressed the former as everything was about to come full circle. Meanwhile, the sequence that ended last week’s episode may very well have been a dream but most viewers surely know better at this point. That dream ended with Sam and Jess waking up in the same bed together, strongly implying that they slept together which did not go well with either of them (The Martins suspected something had happened between them). While this quandary wasn’t quite answered, that awkwardness brought them closer together in an odd kind of way.

Sam and Jess shared stories of their complicated pasts, be it Jess’ abusive ex-husband or Sam’s loss of his six-year-old son Nathan (the mysterious boy presumably) whose body was found in the same place he found Epona after having gone missing weeks prior. It shook him and his wife and he was still shook. His ensuing search for answers led to him finding a newspaper article about his son’s death and he being chased through the woods by some masked men until they were stopped by Epona’s grieving father who was convinced that Epona was dead and seemed to have a problem with Sam.

After his latest discovery, Sam’s plan was to find Jess so they can both get off the island. She was with him until the Martins who once again managed to explain everything away for the most part. Meanwhile, Sam’s latest attempt to inquire about Epona’s condition was denied but they brought her in, very alive. There was clearly still something going on as she was afraid to be forthcoming with the Martins watching. They were mere Christians (though with a Celtic, god-worshipping twist).

In the end, Sam had a chance to drive off the island but decided to turn back and attend the island festival. There, Epona apologized and he and Jess took some acid. Though they went on a trip, all that went away once Sam discovered evidence that Nathan was on the island. The episode ended with Mrs. Martin (she knew his story and what he was going through) whisking him away because she believed him to be in danger. However, he was intercepted nonetheless by the real masked men who were cult members that beat him over the head and dropped a bag on him (he was still high on acid the whole time).

While Sam definitely has a part to play in terms of the island, it will be interesting to see how it transitions to the second half of the miniseries as Law’s great performance has been the glue that has held it so far.
