Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.

With TIFF coming to a close this past weekend, we started to see more activity in regards to the Box Office than last week, as well as some notable releases on VOD and streaming. There were quite a few new theatrical releases, although none of them show signs of threatening Tenet for the top spot.

Cyrus Nowrasteh’s action-thriller Infidel received a wide release and was able to surpass expectations by crossing $1M domestically. The film marked the debut of a brand new distributor going by the name Cloudburst Entertainment. New distributors often have a difficult time generating revenue and with COVID significantly effecting the state of theatrical releases, Cloudburst Entertainment have an uphill battle on their hands. All things considering, Infidel seems to be doing relatively well, although without any word of mouth buzz or a notable marketing campaign, it will have a difficult time outlasting competition.

John Hyams’ minimalistic thriller Alone on the other hand received stellar reviews and is currently holding a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it doesn’t seem to be capturing the attention of general audiences, despite landing a spot in the top 10. The post-WWII thriller The Secrets We Keep, the critically panned social horror film No Escape, Sean Durkin’s star-studded mystery thriller The Nest and the political documentary The Way I See It all placed below the line and are currently sitting at the #11, #12, #13 and #18 spots respectively.

Aside from new releases, Christopher Nolan’s Tenet has managed to secure the top spot for a third week in a row and it only dropped 30% in profit domestically, which is definitely an improvement from last week. The charts haven’t shifted that much, as regulars such as The New MutantsUnhinged, The Broken Hearts GallerySpongebob: Sponge On the Run and Bill & Ted Face the Music are still holding ground in the top 10.

Lionsgate decided to release their socially conscious horror film Antebellum on VOD this past weekend, instead of theatrically like initially planned, which seems like a smart move as the film has absolutely bombed critically, with many referring to it as one of the worst films of the year. The film is currently placed outside of the top 10 on iTunes, which indicates that the bad press is affecting it financially.

Here are the top 10 highest grossing films domestically from the past weekend:

10) Words on the Bathroom Walls (Week 5: $147K)

9) The Personal History of David Copperfield (Week 3: $173K)

8) Alone (Week 1: $182K)

7) Bill & Ted Face the Music (Week 4: $189K)

6) The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run (Week 6: $206K)

5) The Broken Hearts Gallery (Week 2: $802K)

4) Unhinged (Week 6: $1.3M)

3) Infidel (Week 1: $1.4M)

2) The New Mutants (Week 4: $1.8M)

In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
