The Third Day Episode 3: The Ghost Review

Synopsis: Sam is shocked to learn the truth about his connection to Osea and the islanders’ intentions for his future. Later, in a fight for his life, Sam tries desperately to escape their clutches and make it back to the mainland in one piece.(HBO)

What would have been a great season finale is only episode 3 of for The Third Day, where will it go from here?

The Ghost started right where the last episode left off with Sam still in danger after being abducted though who knows for sure since he was still under the influence of acid and it could have also been another of his episodes? From there, we finally learned his connection to the island as he was part of a sacred lineage of men who were fathers of the island until his father’s father had different ideas (Sam’s grandfather was born on the island as opposed to being stationed there). He was subjected to rituals as the residents had a keen interest in him but not everyone did. However, that drama was only the beginning as the pull from the island, whatever it was, was still very much there.

Sam eventually caught up with Jess (her sort of connection to the island was that she was born in a religious society similar to that of the island) and the Martins. They offered to help but first, they told Sam the whole truth. Osea needed a new father for the island, a rightful one as the island was declining, so they targeted his son Nathan in order to groom him to become the eventual father of the island (it was Mr. Martin’s idea actually). The subsequent scolding of the Martins beliefs by Sam seemed to turn Ms. Martin around. Meanwhile, Epona was missing. However, Sam stumbled onto her mutilated body which was allegedly self-inflicted as she presented herself as a sacrifice to the Celtic gods (the moment when we first saw her was her first attempt). The hits kept coming as Nathan was indeed alive (they wanted him all along and merely faked his death).

After enough escape from danger at the hands of Ms. Martin, Sam was led to a boat where Jess happened to be. Not trusting anyone, Sam and Jess took it over but they wouldn’t get very far, especially after one more betrayal at the hands of Jess. She did so as her daughters were being held captive by the island. They went back to all the island residents who were waiting as the old father essentially handed the reigns to Sam who accepted his position and emotionally embraced his son. Of course the island had to be swarmed by locusts (who seemed to bang against what appeared to be glass).

What more can be said about Jude Law? His performance single-handedly carried the first three episodes of the series. With Sam’s story essentially over in an episode that could have been a series finale, where will the series go as it has seemingly done all it had to do? It will be interesting.
