Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.

While many theatres throughout Canada and worldwide remain open, the Ontario government shut down all theatres throughout Toronto, Peel and Ottawa for the 30 days due to the recent spike in COVID cases. It’s unclear whether other provinces and areas throughout the world will respond in the same way, but as of now there are still enough theatres open domestically to be able to report on the Box Office.

With Tenet starting to lose steam, it left room for a new release to take over the #1 spot at the Box Office. The War with Grandpa starring none other than Academy Award winner Robert De Niro has taken over the top spot and surpassed Tenet by more than $1M, which is very significant considering the margin it has been leading by throughout the past few weeks. The film received generally harsh reviews and has not been looked favourably on by most audiences since the trailer was released. However, due to the fact that it is the only major family film currently playing in theatres, it could have a strong hold throughout the next few weeks.

Independent music drama Yellow Rose also managed to find a spot within the top 10. The film has received generally positive reviews from both audiences and critics, as it is currently holding an 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and an 88% audience score. The film lacks the marketing to secure it a spot in the top 10 in the coming weeks, but it could stick around as a below the line contender if the word of mouth buzz picks up.

In terms of streaming releases, Adam Sandler’s Halloween themed comedy Hubie Halloween was released on Netflix and is currently #2 on their trending charts. The film has received relatively mixed to negative reviews, but has already managed to attract a passionate cult-following and is doing well with general audiences who are fans of Sandler’s early work.

Here are the top 10 highest grossing films domestically from the past weekend:

10) Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (Week 14: $145K)

9) Yellow Rose (Week 1: $150K)

8) Possessor (Week 2: $151K)

7) Infidel (Week 4: $206K)

6) Coco (Week 151: $210K)

5) Unhinged (Week 9: $683K)

4) The New Mutants (Week 7: $706K)

3) Hocus Pocus (Week 2: $1.2M)

2) Tenet (Week 6: $2.1M)

1) The War with Grandpa (Week 1: $3.6M)

In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
