The Dark saw the convoluted storylines of The Third Day collide in a somewhat satisfying episode featuring a solid performance from Naomie Harris. At least it's over now.

Synopsis: With a battle for power brewing, Helen comes face to face with what she’s been searching for since arriving on the island. When the sisters are separated, Tallulah witnesses a gruesome act of violence, and Ellie learns of their mother’s hidden agenda. As tensions reach a fever pitch for all those on Osea Island, Helen and her girls make a desperate final attempt to escape. (HBO)

On paper, 6 episodes didn’t seem like enough and after watching the series finale of The Third Day, another episode definitely would have helped as the end will inevitably leave some viewers disappointed. The episode saw the converging of the series’ many convoluted storylines in a rather unexciting fashion. This backhalf has seriously been a test as it has given away nearly all the good will it had earned over that first half therefore it will be a wonder if anyone even bothers to care about the final outcome at this point. Nevertheless, Naomie Harris certainly goes for it here performance wise to the point that it almost helped to make up for many of its flaws.

The Dark began with where the last episode left off, foreshadowing the confrontation we’ve all sort of been waiting for which was Helen confronting Sam about everything that had happened. Sam was clearly delusional as a result of his grief but he was adamant that Nathan was alive. He brought her to the big house to see Nathan but he didn’t seem quite right despite Sam’s claims that he was indeed their son. He didn’t look right but most importantly, Nathan was too young to be their son who went missing as a 6 year-old 10 years ago. Helen rightfully called him out on that. As far as she was concerned, she only wanted the money Sam stole.

Mrs. Martin admitted that the boy with Sam was not Nathan and that she lied to him because he was fragile. It was just a ploy to get Sam to stay and be the father of Osea that got out of control. Meanwhile, Osea was stuck in a power struggle between Sam and Jess for whom the latter believed her new daughter could lead the island. The mysterious girl with Ellie was one of Jess’ daughters. She and Jess continued to build Ellie up as someone special, essentially manipulating her, while the former told her the truth about her parents and how her email was what got them to the island in the first place. Tallulah was also on her own and trying to survive.

Sam was merely an obstacle of Jess and her daughter so she sent people after him for which Mr. Martin was their first victim. Ellie was brought back to Sam and Helen but she was upset and vulnerable and conveniently didn’t want to go anymore. Back in town, Jess took charge, eliminating Mrs. Martin, and Sam and Helen were taken as prisoners in the Martins’ where Tallulah was hiding with a knife. She freed them and they fled once again.

Now armed, Sam took out some of Jess’ loyalists and found the money he took. He gave the money to Helen and told her to wait out the night with their girls. Instead, Helen put them in a boat and faced the cold water while swimming it to shore. Once ashore, Ellie and Tallulah got their mother to safety and warmth and the episode ended with the three of them together.

What happened to Sam on Osea? I guess we’ll never know but the ending was still a nice moment.
