Synopsis: The team learns about the program’s budget cuts and what impact they will have on their mission going forward. When Elon Musk’s SpaceX sets up camp right next door, Cap, Skip and Rook invite them over for a welcoming tour and to make a mutually beneficial proposition. (Showtime)
If there was anything to take away from this episode, it’s time to feel old
Visitors started with Cap’s rover joyride being cut short. Meanwhile, due to budget cuts for the moonbase program, NASA forged a deal with the MARS candy company. The team’s first task was product testing which Skip found beneath him. He also discovered that SpaceX installed a base of their own nearby in preparation for their mission to Mars. The big issue was how to approach this other base to form some sort of partnership to bridge their budgetary woes (other issues aside such as protocol). One member of the SpaceX team had a connection to Skip, a former assistant named Billy (Adam Lambert).
After receiving the team’s message, the SpaceX decided to visit Moonbase 8 (their protocol meant they couldn’t have visitors). Once Billy, Cooper (Thomas Mann), and Alex (Alia Shawkat arrived, the team was given a gift. The SpaceX team were given a tour and they did not seem impressed as it was clear that their set up was far superior (this snowballed the longer they were together as Cap continued to embarrass the team). Catching up with Billy, it didn’t seem that SpaceX needed to merge with NASA but they were always looking for talent therefore he tried to recruit Skip (the others’ later attempt got shot down).
Despite what it may have entailed, Skip chose to stay with NASA out of a duty to his father and the team. In the end, Cap put things in perspective in a way that only he could, showing his pride and appreciation for the team by standing up on the table and delivering an inspiring speech. Just one where he forgot to take his boots off first.
All in all, the cameo gimmick is still working but the episode could have played up the contrast between NASA and SpaceX a little more (other than the young vs. old angle) though the Skip backstory was a nice touch. Another solid episode in a series that has failed to be anything more than just okay.
