Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.

With the bombshell that HBO and Warner Bros. dropped this past weekend, many movie-goers are concerned about the future of movie theatres. Will streaming completely take over and will theatres multiplex’s become obsolete? Will the Box Office be able to maintain its relevancy. These are questions that are impossible to answer at this point. How this announcement affects the state of the Box Office, especially once we’re out of lockdown and major films get wide distribution, will be crucial in determining the future of movie theatres. Unfortunately, theatres remain closed in highly populated areas throughout Canada and the U.S., as the pandemic rages on and the lockdown continues and that is definitely reflected in this week’s Box Office results.

The Croods: A New Age continues to absolutely dominate, as it was the only film to earn more than one million domestically this past weekend. Luke Greenfield’s road trip film Half Brothers was the highest grossing new release and managed to debut at #2. Focus Features’ is keeping this film afloat, as it lacks the strong reviews and word of mouth buzz required to become a breakout hit. It will likely begin to freefall on the charts by next week.

The star-studded romantic-drama All My Life debuted at #4, which is surprising considering the film is fairly prolific and has a solid marketing campaign. Henry Goulding and Jessica Rothe are big enough names to sell a film in today’s climate, so it’s definitely strange that the film was not the highest grossing of the week. Its possible that the romantic comedy/drama field is too crowded at the moment with gems like Happiest Season.

Netflix released the highly anticipated Mank on streaming this past week and it has received incredibly divisive reviews. While the film appears to still be an Oscars heavyweight, its chances at winning Best Picture definitely look slim. That being said, the film is doing very well financially, as it has been floating around the upper half of the Top 10 trending charts on Netflix.

Here are the top 10 highest grossing films domestically from the past weekend:

10) Die Hard: 2020 Re-release (Week 1: $189K)

9) Honest Thief (Week 9: $192K)

8) Let Him Go (Week 5: $209K)

7) Come Play (Week 6: $230K)

6) The War With Grandpa (Week 7: $316K)

5) Elf: 2020 Re-release (Week 4: $320K)

4) All My Life (Week 1: $370K)

3) Freaky (Week 4: $477K)

2) Half Brothers (Week 1: $700K

1) The Croods: A New Age (Week 2: $4.4M)

In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
