Welcome back to Box Office Breakdown, the weekly segment where I analyze the top ten highest grossing films of the past weekend. As theatres continue to reopen and prepare for an onslaught of new theatrical releases, we will be analyzing the state of the box office, as well as VOD and streaming.
With the recent announcement that the entirety of Ontario will be in lockdown for the next thirty days, which in turn sees the closure of theatres, the Box Office is going to continue to be very uneventful in the coming weeks. The first week of January is typically a dead-zone for the Box Office, and that continues to be the case this year as there were no new theatrical releases.
The biggest story of the week is that Wonder Woman 1984 suffered a massive 67.1% decrease in profit from last week. This size of decrease isn’t entirely out of question for blockbusters, but considering the lack of competition and the Christmas release date, many expected the film to have a tighter hold. It seems to be slipping theatrically and while HBO Max have not release any statistics, its safe to assume that it faced a major decrease on streaming as well. If the film continues to drop in the coming weeks, it will be interesting to see how Warner Bros. responds and if they choose to stick with their plan to release all of their 2021 films on HBO Max.
Here are the top 10 highest grossing films domestically from the past weekend:
10) Come Play (Week 10: $59K)
9) Alien: 2020 Re-release (Week 1: $75K)
8) The War With Grandpa (Week 13: $118K)
7) Pinocchio (Week 2: $228K)
6) Promising Young Woman (Week 2: $689K)
5) Fatal (Week 3: $702K)
4) Monster Hunter (Week 3: $1.3M)
3) News of the World (Week 2: $1.7M)
2) The Croods: A New Age (Week 6: $2.2M)
1) Wonder Woman (Week 2 :$5.5M)
In the coming weeks, we will continue to analyze the state of VOD releases and will provide updates regarding upcoming films.
