Synopsis: As Ryan continues to prove herself as Batwoman, she encounters the challenge of living a double life; Luke continues to have reservations about Ryan; Victor Szasz slashes his way through the city streets; Safiyah takes notice of Alice’s antics. (TVGuide)

This week’s episode of Batwoman starts off on a startling note as we see a man sneak his way into a couple’s room, and murder them on the spot. To mark his “victories”, he slashes a mark into his skin (ew, ew, ew!), and that, ladies and gentlemen, is how we meet Victor Zsasz (Alex Morf). Luke, Ryan, and Mary attempt to take him down throughout the episode and learn that he is working for Safiyah. He was tasked with taking down anyone with desert rose in their system after last week’s bat poisonings, and is quite the difficult person to take down. But luckily, our new Batwoman (with an awesome new, updated hairdo) kicks his butt before he can cause too much damage.

However, there is something rather interesting about this episode because it has a lot of name drops including but not limited to Batman and Jack Napier, aka the Joker. In fact, Commander Kane was given Kate’s phone from the wreckage and found a picture of a Jack Napier painting with Safiyah’s name on it. How is this all connected?! We’ll have to wait to find out.

Ryan Wilder  tries to make sense of this new and very exciting journey she has found herself on. But more importantly, Sophie and Alice find themselves waking up on the island Coryana with its ruler Safiyah (Shivaani Ghai), after being abducted by her goons. Tatiana (Leah Gibson) is given the duty to watch over Sophie (we’re not sure why she was kept alive), while Alice has an interesting chat with Safiyah. At this point, Alice wholeheartedly believes Safiyah is responsible for bringing down Kate’s plane, even though Safiyah continuously tells her this is far from the case.

She says she didn’t kill Kate, but Safiyah has been pissed that Alice shared the secret of the desert rose with the world. Its miracle-curing properties were never meant to be shared with anyone. And as the episode goes on, we start to realize that Safiyah and Alice have a very long history with one another. In fact, Safiyah found Alice on a boat that she and her people were raiding not long after Alice escaped from her captivity.

Despite how much power we’ve seen Alice yield over the last season or so, it seems in the face of Safiyah, that power diminishes greatly. But the rage she feels within is very much alive, and it seems like it has its proper place. Safiyah reveals that she has Kate’s necklace and tries to prove that she did not blow up the plane from inside because she has in her possession Kate’s necklace. So, Kate’s alive? Does this mean Ruby Rose will come back at some point? Probably not. I think they intended to drag this story for as long as possible until we tire of it. Can they just accept Kate’s gone and Safiyah is probably messing with them big time?

Eventually, Alice and Sophie find themselves back in Gotham City, not as the enemies as they are, but as allies that will have to work together to get Kate “back”.
