Sometimes it is hard to look for movies on the streaming services. And there are so many options out there we end up bypassing some truly great choices. Here are 5 Romantic movies to stream on Valentine’s Day.
Sylvie’s Love (2020)
This is a beautifully crafted homage to the 50’s and 60’s romantic movies, bringing a very welcome modernization of the norm casting the amazing Tessa Thompson and Nnamdi Asomigha as the two lovers who go separate ways but never lose their bond.
It’s a slow-paced movie but never boring, mostly because director Eugene Ashe does such a marvelous job telling this story. We feel for the characters, we are always connected with them, and the supporting players bring more depth and flavor to the film. It’s an old-fashioned romance, with a delicious soundtrack. This one is perfect to swoon over.

Moonstruck (1987)
One of the best romantic comedies of the 80’s, is still as good now as it was when it came out. It has the rare quality of being incredibly delicate and soft while at the same time having tons of personality and flavor.
Cher is fantastic as Lorena and she has such a great chemistry with Nicolas Cage. But the real standouts are Olympia Dukakis and Vincent Gardenia as her parents, who have their own love story to tell. It’s a bittersweet movie, suave and endearing, more suitable for mature audiences.

The Notebook (2004)
No one does love + tragedy better than Nicholas Sparks, especially because all movies based on his books all pretty much look the same. The exception is The Notebook, which gets an expert direction by Nick Cassavetes but mostly relies strongly in the killer chemistry between Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling, one of the most incendiary from the last 2 decades.
The two actors struggled a lot during shooting, but you never see that in their work; on the contrary, they sell every minute of this film, making us cheer and cry a lot a lot in the end. It’s an old-fashioned film, but it plays its cards very intelligently.

Love.com (2017)
This Brazilian film plays one of the most used ideas in romantic films: totally opposite people who desperately fall in love with each other.
This one brings a touch of modern with the lead characters, two social influencers who have completely different target audiences that absolutely hate when they get together. It’s a charming film, using the romance card to its advantage while also touching in some important themes such as the overexposure of modern times. The two actors, Ísis Valverde and Gil Coelho, have wonderful chemistry together.

Carol (2015)
Todd Haynes is one of the best directors working today. He’s a true visionary, with a strong visual style, and most importantly: he knows how to transport us into the universe of the story being told.
Carol is a beautiful romance, with two phenomenal lead actresses, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, doing wonders with the material. Again, it’s a slow-paced film, highly relying in silence and the looks between the two characters. Their story could almost be told without dialogue, and specially Mara does wonders with her time on screen. It’s touching, it’s emotional, and the final scene just totally breaks our hearts.
