Synopsis: When the hospital is hit with a cyber attack threatening to shut down life-saving machines, Lea rises to the challenge and looks to outsmart the hackers to prove herself. (IMDb)

For those waiting and waiting for Paige Spara to have a breakout episode, this episode was it as she and Richard Schiff led the way (as well as Fiona Gubelmann in a lowkey way) here as their budding relationship paid off here as they had to work together to save the hospital. That being said, the cases of the week were just as big though they took more of a complimentary role in the season’s storylines as one relationship was mended while another came to an end.

Decrypt started with Lea having a bad start to her day and Reznick tending to a patient with Down Syndrome named Jamie who needed a liver transplant, prompting the other doctors to find a donor. Jamie’s friend’s liver was not suitable but her kidney was for helping others. Park found a paroled inmate and their daughter who could help both of them. Needing to diffuse the situation, Allen lied. In the end, the transplants were a success.

Meanwhile, Browne, Murphy, and Jackson had a cancer survivor and endurance athlete (Murphy had questions) who passed out during a triathlon. His past cancer and chemo therapy made it challenging to treat him now despite his positive attitude from also being a motivational speaker. As their current treatment wasn’t working, he admitted to not having had cancer which presented its own set of challenges, including ethical ones on both sides of the issue. The news that someone leaked the truth did not sit well with Lim who immediately accused Browne. As the situation got worse, Lim benched Browne for the surgery which was successful. Not wanting to hurt the department, Jackson confessed to talking to the press.

As a woman, Lea has constantly been undermined and disrespected all her life and little did she know, she would be put to the test here as the hospital came under attack by a group of hackers. Contending with her was an insurance representative who was skeptical of her ability and was adamant that the hospital pay the ransom fee. Murphy also did not take her job seriously but got the staredown for his trouble. In the end, the challenge proved to be a tough one for her confidence-wise. Leave it to Murphy to make up for earlier with a pep talk. Taking a big risk, it would pay off as Lea got control of the hospital’s network back.

As Jackson was leaving, she and Andrews had a moment where she admitted to not wanting to have been a doctor. She just wanted to be herself, whatever that was. Nevertheless, he remained supportive of his niece. Meanwhile wanting to mend their relationship, Lim visited Browne with a peace offering. Also, saving the hospital earned Lea an invite to poker night with Glassman and his friends which was cool.

The series is at its best when it is firing on all cylinders and this episode was yet another example of this not to mention series star Freddie Highmore directed it which doesn’t hurt either. It’s episodes like this that make it all worth it.
