Gender Reveal was a compelling episode that saw Murphy grow as a person and a father as he dealt with the coming of his first child.

Synopsis: After finding out the gender of their unborn child, Lea’s enthusiasm prompts Shaun to make an effort to be a more supportive partner. Meanwhile, the team treats a navy pilot whose previous doctor’s misdiagnosis compromises her chances at a full recovery. (IMDb)

Murphy has to put his medical background aside and come to terms with what he can and cannot do when it comes to taking care of the birth of his first child (the episode title obviously hints at the gender of said child being revealed). This episode saw him dealing with that issue in a way that was very much him, full of awkwardness and naivety while asking questions and getting in bad situations. Throw in a few unconventional cases and the result is another good episode of The Good Doctor.

Gender Reveal began with Reznick and Park defining their relationship where she did not see each other as exclusive and thought he should date other people. Their screwing with another continued as Park pursued other women thanks to Reznick’s hijacking of his Bumble account (but she clearly had deeper feeling for him and had to get over her own intimacy issues). Meanwhile, Murphy and Lea are having a girl though the latter seemed to be the only one excited about it. The cases involved an MMA fighter named Bradley Vargas (Farley Jackson) who suffered from a chest contusion with a hematoma that needed to be drained. Also, a navy pilot named Jean who was set for a hip replacement. While the former case dealt with issues of body image and perception, the latter dealt with the pressures of being a woman in a male-dominated profession.

With his reputation coming from his body, the fact that Vargas had pec implants was a contentious issue. Of course there was more going on here as the doctors discovered that Vargas had breast cancer. His implants were vital to maintaining his body and his career therefore treatment, a mastectomy, was an issue until it became unavoidable. However, Vargas was adamant on taking a harder path to recovery if it meant maintaining his career. He needed to be set straight and as a result, the world was very receptive and supportive of his condition.

During Jean’s hip replacement, a sudden loss in blood pressure was cause for concern. The issues persisted following the surgery as all she wanted to do was to get back in the sky. It inevitably became clear that she was grossly misdiagnosed by her former doctors as her unrecorded symptoms fit more with parkinson’s disease. It was too late for the doctors to do anything but help her manage her symptoms. In the end, it brought her closer to her daughter for whom she pushed aside in favor of her career.

Murphy had to learn that it wasn’t about what he thought Lea needed but rather, he had to listen to what she wanted. There were a few bumps along the way such as being kicked out of a birthing class for constantly questioning the teacher and eavesdropping on another delivery. It was all about giving Lea the piece of mind that she needed and in the end, Murphy came around and gave Lea what she needed.

That baby is coming sooner rather than later.
