The simple fact that some managed to make a film in their garage is absolutely amazing. Frank & Zed is about two reanimated corpses that have to work together to survive an angry mob that attacks them out of fear of a prophecy of death. The beauty about this film is is a horror comedy mixed with the joy and hilarity of the muppets. Although everything is a puppet, they do not hold back on the violence on screen. The filmmakers use kickstarter to raise funds before achieving at making the film over six years. They even created a short that was played before the film which took them six months to make. The effort and love behind the production of this passion project is clear to see. The film is a fun ride full of organically lovable characters that are both charismatic and creative. In the end, it is an enjoyable film for those who like creative storytelling and have something new and refreshing.
The detailed set pieces and the world of Frank and Zed were impressive considering they were created inside of a garage. The characters all had different distinct looks and personality which is hard to do as it is difficult to show emotion with puppets. The film is a brutal and unforgiving comedic voyage of a new form of moviemaking. Horror was delivered in multiple ways of guts, blood, violence and tension. Mixed with horror is this great comedic tone that felt ridiculous. It was also very self aware of what it was. Meanwhile, witty and entertaining dialogue will leave viewers in stitches. While the story lagged at points, it was still engaging to watch for the most part.
Though the story of Frank and Zed may not be original, the way it was told was. The film is sure to be a crowd favorite.
